I'm looking to get into playing Irish music on the diatonic. They all seem pretty expensive. I see a used 1950's Hugo Rauner diatonic for sale. Are these any good?

I have no idea if that particular harp was good to start with, but buying used is always a bit of a risk.

What, in particular are you looking for? I mean, if you want a diatonic for playing Irish music, get a new harp in D to start with. What is your budget? You can get a good diatonic for $40, a bit less if you really look around.

If you have a bit more, you could look at Brendan Power's stuff. He's got that slide thingy where you can put two diatonics in. Somewhere he's got a video where he used two keys (I think a fifth apart) to really good effect to play Irish stuff.

A good diatonic is a good diatonic. If you want a diatonic to play exceptional Irish music, then give it to Brenden Power or James Conway. (That's a hint to look up YouTube videos by these guys.)

I'd go with a Lee Oskar for that style of music. The available tunings seem to cater to what was originally mentioned.

Irish music is very demanding for harmonica players, you need the best instrument you can get. Don't bother with an old instruments, it won't be up to the task.

Brendan Power's Paddy Richter tuning is probably the way to go. That way you can play in first position (i.e. key of the harmonica is the key of the tune. Seydel sell Paddy Richter tuned diantonics, e.g. from Rockin Ron

Or, if yo're a second position (cross harp) player, i.e. using a C harmonica for tunes in G, the you might want to try my Major Cross tuning, details here

While these higher quality custom tuned instruments may seem expensive, the good news is that you only need two, to cover the keys G and D
