I was playing around the other day with articulations. I googled and found this list of speech therapy sounds and started 'saying' them as I played blow and draw notes. Aside from the tic a tac a sorts of things harp players already know it was sort of interesting to see how different mouth shapes change the tone. J and Y were interesting both on blows and draws, and to my surprise, I think I like 'th' better than 'ch' for train chugging sounds. If anyone else plays with them, let me know what your favorites are.

I do tukkatukka for train-chugging. I've got Madcat's fabulous DVD, but can't remember anything about what he says. Buy it if you can. (or watch it online if it's unavailable)

I've never made the speech therapy/articulation connection. I concede there is a lot going on in my mouth & throat, but I just never could tie it together with similar consonants. Maybe it's time to revisit that.

The speech articulation connection is a basic concept used in harmonica technique education. I just assumed every teacher used this as a tool.

huckata tuckata (a la Madcat) is essential to rhythm diatonic styles.

One of the things I think makes the harmonica so expressive is the way it responds to various articulations. I use a lof ot ooh, ah, ya, and others to change the timbre and do soft articulations.

STME58, it was actually listening to someone make the harmonica 'talk' that got me over the hump with bends. Salty Holmes for the win!

Nate, one can also sing while playing a la Wade Schumann. You can do this on a brass instrument also, but it is a lot easier on a harmonica.

STME58, yeah, actually my first harmonica recording I did that. 'gotta quarter, need a quarter, not a dime, not a dime, or a dollar' Rhythmic number about the tragedy of not having enough money for the candy machine! :)

ValleyDuke, yeah, the next step beyond the different basic articulations is combining them, and this list, of course, just deals with speech ones. What I actually started off looking for was a list of sounds English speakers can make (I vaguely recall that there are different lists for different languages.) Tongue clucks work too, and kiss pops... and combinations, lots and lots of combinations!

@nacoran I looked at the list of 'K' words. "Chicken" is fun. Chicka, chicka, chicka.
