Not really that big a gig, but big for us. I usually would take sudafed- and probably still will, though it can make me nervous. Non-drowsy antihistamines are really better for allergies, - but may be the option. Anyway, - what's your 'magic bullet' for a situation like this ??

Pseudoephedrine will get you through a gig, as you mentioned, but I would suggest using the 30mg version, one an hour before the gig and another 2-3 hours later. The 12 hour time release (or if you take two 30mg at the same time as the package suggests) can give you the jitters. If you drink, be moderate. Have a good gig!

For sore throat and/or froggy voice, you can gargle warm salt water before the gig. Then, pseudoephedrine 30mg as noted above.

Depends on the symptoms. I just got over a bad cold and I was taking Guaifenesin (Mucinex) and Dextromethorphan (Delsym)... and cough drops (be careful of the sugar free ones, they can cause intestinal trouble if you have too many), and Afrin (which works really well but is only good for short term use. It's good for stuffy noses but can actually make things worse if you overuse it) and my inhalers, and a Z-pack, and prednisone, and lots of tea (it was a doozy of a cold). And a nasal saline spray, and something called Ponaris, both of which are sort of in the same category as cough drops, only for your nose to make it less irritated).

Pseudoephedrine gives me the jitters and makes me light headed. For the nose Afrin is magic. For feeling like you need to cough the Delsym is great.

Thanks everyone. Nose not quite as bad today, - mostly in the chest. Hot tea will be first medication, with backup meds in the bag. I will be trying some of your suggestions - if not tonight.

Hi Bonedog,

I actually started a thread like this a few weeks ago. Got lots of responses very similar to those posted here.

My throat was very sore and I had almost no voice, so the doctor gave me a 5 day course of Prednisone. She said, "This'll make it so you can sing. It probably won't be the best performance you ever had, but it's reduce the swelling in your vocal folds enough that you'll be functional." And that's exactly what it did. I was able to sing, but man was my throat sore the next few days after.

Other stuff that worked for me was:

I rubbed a ton of Vicks Vapo-Rub on my chest before the gig. Wear a rubber glove if you do this, you don't want any of that on your hands as they will be up near your face and eyes. Even though it works better, don't put it under your nose because you'll get it all over your harmonicas.

I did take Claritin-D (an antihistamine plus pseudoephedrine, a decongestant) but I am used to it, so I don't get jittery from it. However it can make your blood pressure go higher, so if you have any BP issues I would check with your doc before taking anything with pseudoephedrine.

I also rinsed out my sinuses with a saline rinse (it feels a little weird but you get used to it) and I used Afrin a half hour before the gig. I only used it once and I had no issues with rebound congestion.

Good luck!

Thanks Cliff. Thankfully I wasn't as bad as you where and my nastiest symptoms subsided before the gig. I rallied with a lot of tea and luckily no nasty coughing or sneezing during our set. They got my 'deep sexy voice'. Worst consequence, I couldn't sleep afterward. Took sleep med.s and still slept like crap - but got to stay in bed most of today.

Biggest thrill, - hanging in the green room with Ramblin Jack Elliot,- who told a bunch of stories and did sound fx imitations of the Queen Mary (the ship) among other things.
