After a hiatus, I was asked to get back in the game and play at a local venue. The only problem? My band split up almost a year ago. What's a boy to do? I've joked about it for a long time, but now I'm going for it. ONE MAN BAND!

I'm excited and I have some cool stuff put together, but I am asking for any suggestions/tips/tricks for starting out with the OMB thing. I will be making all of my foot drums as I don't have money to drop on some nice foot drums. So that's the plan.

Thanks in advance for all advise!

Skip the foot drums. So juvenile and silly....

Unless you can do something intricate, going thump thump thump thump on the beat all night is stressful to the listener.

Haha. Yeah I have been studying every OMB I can find online, but I think I play with my balls enough to be trying to be figuring all that out while just trying to get off the ground.

Ol' Juzzie is a talented dude though.

Depending on how skilled you are at making things you might look into a cajon. Those shakers are pretty cheap too, and you can get a leg tamborine for like $10. (I didn't know that and got the much more cumbersome regular one for $40.)

You don't say if you are playing in a rack or not. A simple cigar box guitar can work well on a budget. What you need to do with percussion changes depending on what else you've got going on.

Go for the foot drums or a stomp box kind of set up.
People love it. Same with a foot tambourine folks get a big kick out of it.
Of course you don't have to use each and every thing in each song..but figure you already know that.

One of the best songs I know of written by a one man band guy is
San Francisco Bay Blues...perhaps it's one you already know.
Good Luck !!

I've made 6 CBGs. Just finished one actually. If I could figure out how to post a picture, I would show ya the latest creation. The plan was to use the latest CBG In my OMB.

@minor blues- I appreciate that view. What would you recommend for a percussive element?

You know , you don't have to be a OMB to play solo.

That said , I wear tap shoes rather than use foot drums ,and keep a beat that way.
Guitar,harp rack,tap shoes .easy Peasy .

Dogface, to post a picture you need to host it somewhere else first- Photobucket or Flikr. Then you right click on it and there should be something that says 'Copy image link' or 'copy image address'. Paste that here and people can at least click to it. There is some code you can put it in to actually show in the thread.
