Hi all,

Was looking for your experience and tips re the following.

I have only ever recorded cds and vinyl and have successfully circumnavigated Spotify and iTunes (for the most part). I am, however, considering whether it is worthwhile offering downloads for a couple of upcoming releases I have. I see three options, unless you have more!

1. We sell Download Codes for less than the physical version of the album. There are several providers of this type of service and it is both cheap and easy.

2. We sell Vinyl that includes a Download Code in the price. Can you motivate people to buy a record if they get the download that most of them also want FREE?

3. We sell CDs and records as usual and use the Download Codes as promo material only.

Whaddya think? I'm torn and am yet to move out of the "But that's how we've always done it!" mindset.

I bought a cassette at a show once. I guess there is a group of people who like the sound of cassettes. Buying it came with a free download code though. I never listened to the cassette version. It was just sort of a gimmick to remind me I'd bought the cassette. It worked!

Generally speaking I think most people sell the download code (although if they have a whole album they will give away a card with the download code for one song). If you sell a hard copy version the download code always seems to come free. It may not seem like there is a huge difference between buying a download code and just buying a digital download later, but I think having something physical can drive the sale at the show. Even if all they get is a business card with their download claim number on it you've gotten the sale before they leave and get distracted by something else.

Maybe sell the download code for 20% less than the physical version? That makes it feel a little like you are getting a deal whichever way you buy it. Yes, people want free download codes. If you play a lot of local shows it may be worth giving your music away for promotion, but I think most fans are more willing to support small artists.

Thanks Nate. I think your suggestion about selling a code cheaper than the actual physical CD/LP may be a way to go.

I am unsure about whether to go the LP plus free download route or the classic CD and cheaper download code alternative option.

I wonder if there are enough people out there to justify only doing vinyl and the download code thing!
