Other than using longer screws (I think something like a 12mm M2 would work on a Crossover), what easy and fast methods are there for adding a support to avoid crushing?

I haven't tried any of these, but I've brainstormed about this a bit before.
Hering has a little slot built into their harps that has a metal piece that fits in right where the plastic support would be on a Sp20, but retrofitting a harp to hold that would be a pain.
Another idea that would be a pain but that might look nice (I'm not even sure what tool you'd use to drill for it) would be a ring that went through both sides (about the size of a key chain ring?) Not sure how you would drill curved holes.
But easy and fast, maybe JB Weld a strip of metal along the length of the covers? Or maybe swap some MB covers onto it that haven't been opened up so they still have that support tab running along the back. Bend it 90 degrees along the length and basically mount it so it looks like the original flat on a MB?
There are some specialty screws I looked at a long time ago, and some of them might have looked better than regular screws. It seems what would really look good would be a custom sex bolt- instead of having the normal heads where you'd use the screwdriver you'd have two long pillars. You'd hand tighten them. I looked for something like this online and found things close, but not quite right. Someone with a jewelers lathe could make them, but probably price prohibitive unless you were focusing on that as a product.
The JB Weld and swapping MB covers are probably the only practical ideas for a one off.

If you only use one brace in the center area, it can sometimes act like a fulcrum and nake the outer areas more suseptible to bending. Tom Halchak of Blue Moon does pretty nice braces. One thing he does is leave the tip of each brace just short of the surface of the cover to avoid the fulcrum effect while still preventing the cover from collapsing under pressure.
Buddha used to use brass rods and drill a hole in the comb. Chris Reynolds does the same thing, but uses a thinner and more tightly fitted rod. Tom Halchak's braces attach through reed plate screw holes and are the most intelligent design I've come across.

Its not often that my name and the word intelligent bump into each other in the same sentence. I use M2.0 threaded brass rods and female threaded brass spacers or standoffs. They are essentially computer parts. Very Easy to work with.

Tom,
Do you sell sets? I need them for just two Crossovers. They look great! Clever idea! ---------- Mike My Website My Harmonica Effects Blog

Mike: Email me your address. I'll send you a few sets.
The Special 20 is a no-brainer because there is already a little notch in the reed plate for the braces that are built into the ABS comb. So I just drill a hole in that space and it doesn't get in the way of any of the screws. I also use these braces on Manjis by just replaing the back center screw with the threaded rod. Both are M2.0. The Crossovers use M1.6 screws so I would suggest you drill and tap the center hole for the M2.0 threaded rod or you could drill a dedicated hole in the plates and comb just for the brace. Your call. ---------- Tom Halchak www.BlueMoonHarmonicas.com

I love Blue Moon braces and all these Blue Moon products. I use a Blue Moon something or other on almost every instrument I have and am a big fan of these products, this business, it's owner and how it runs. Jason Ricci ---------- www.mooncat.org

I really Love the brace idea. Ive been meaning to figure something out that i could use, but ...well i haven't yet, lol.
I have SO many Harps with bent covers and i freakin Hate it.
The simple small brass rod idea isn't bad.
But i prefer something along the lines of Toms method. Something that actually screws on.
If you can spare a few more Tom, i wouldn't mind buying them next time I order comb. ----------

When do they crunch?
I'm not being facetious. I'm just curious. It used to happen to mine when I carried them in my pocket but I was usually able pop them out. It was the sand in my pockets that really did the damage and caused me to rethink.
The standoffs do look nice tho.
