I made a comment about an ocarina player once on YouTube. I said, 'Listen to that Yakety Sax!'.

Someone yelled at me for insulting the ocarina player. (When I explained to them that was the name of the song they were a little embarrassed).

I think fans are in constant siege mode defending their favorites. When you look at social media there is so much trolling behavior where people are just looking for a reaction that fans lose the ability to respond to honest critique.

And then of course, you have the fans who are so far gone into fandom that they can't handle honest critique. If you want hate, try going onto the YouTube thread for a Metallica video and pointing out that they have stolen a bunch of songs without paying royalties or that their new stuff is measurably better than their 'classics'. :)

It upset me Nate, and so I have left twitter

which is a bore because I use it for music publicity

The fans are in constant siege mode as you say, and I don't want hate lol

Not a surprise to me at all. Now this thing I'm about to say may come off as a rant for some, but what I'm about to tell you one should really pay attention to and that now that the internet, the blogosphere and even more so, social media from Twitter to Facebook and beyond, if you put together bands with really questionable musicians like musicians who have lousy time and the band is really grooveless, it ain't like when I started out that it would take 6-9 months before having a band like that will hurt reputation of both the band as well as the bandleader, it now takes as little as 6-9 minutes and often a lot less than that. On the other hand, as a musician, one thing every pro musician will tell you that still holds true is that you absolutely HAVE to grow some seriously thick skin and if you're thin skinned with a hair trigger temper, you're gonna be a mess and you won't survive it. Nobody says you gotta like it, but you gotta learn to deal with it because you really don't have a choice in the matter.8wwxt

I'm not a Twitter guy, but I have noticed a trend on Facebook. I'm getting a lot of friend requests from some random hot babe. Now, I always delete them, because its some kind of scam. But I've noticed lately that the requests I've been getting show one or two friends in common, and they are all harmonica players. Be careful who's friend requests you accept! There are scams to take your money out there. If I have a question, I will message the person asking why they want to be my friend. If they say they are a harp player, too, I ask what they play.

If you think that is bad try going to you tube when a celebrity dies and wait for a page like ign to announce the death. The troll comments from there can be downright vicious- I learned this after the death of Robin Williams- i make it a point to never criticize anyone online. If I do make a comment its normally either a good one or a positive one telling them to keeep improving they are on the right track
