Sonny Terry was privileged to perform in the original 1947 Broadway production of Finian's Rainbow (thanks in no small part to his lifetime friend, Pete Seeger). There was a revival production on Broadway in 2009. Guy Davis, an amazing performer who acts, sings, plays guitar and a mean harmonica, played the part of Sonny Terry. Here's a musical tribute to Sonny.
There is a meme where you say 'I'm getting a kick out of this because', so you might, for instance, comment in a thread about house fires say, 'I'm getting a kick out of this because my house is on fire right now'.
Of course, it doesn't have to be negative. For instance, I'm get a kick out of this thread because I've got tickets to see Guy Davis on the 18th!
Totally awesome. I love throwin' harmonica where words should be and vice versa. I get a kick out of it because Sonny Terry was bad ass when it came to whoops and hollers!
I saw a Guy Davis solo show by chance more than 10 years ago. He blew me away. He's a very versatile performer, both as an instrumentalist (he also played some banjo blues if I recall) and in his range of songs and stories. Go and see him if he's ever nearby. ----------
Bump... saw the show tonight. Caffe Lena is a historic little club in Saratoga, NY where a lot of great acts played before they made it big. I'm guessing they had about 80 of us packed in there. Crowded, but very intimate. Davis had a guy named Professor Louie with him, playing accordion and piano. Great show. There were a lot of spots when the accordion did some very harmonica-esque runs. Davis, of course, played some harp too, Howlin Wolf Red Rooster, some Sonny Terry stuff. Really good show. Only complaint was the seats were pretty uncomfortable and they had us packed in tight and one of the people they put at my table had terrible breath! I guess that's what they call ambiance. Didn't detract from the show much. :)
