I know there's a number of players on this forum in or from the Pittsburgh area so I'm hoping you can help me out. My gal and I will be in town Thanksgiving weekend and we're looking for somewhere to hear blues or jazz on Friday night, Nov.27. I've been going to some of the websites of the local clubs but I'm kind of striking out. The best option so far seems to be a smooth jazz combo - meh. Maybe it's an off night because of the holiday. Any help in narrowing the search would be appreciated. Also open to Rock, Americana or Country if they're good.
We'll probably do the Andy Warhol museum during the day but any other daytime suggestions would be appreciated as well. I seem to recall a strip with a bunch of Italian markets that was pretty cool but that was 20 yrs. ago. Needing some help from a local!

You are in luck for Friday. The Jimmy Adler band will be having his CD release party at Moondog's in Blawnox,a Pittsburgh suburb.Jimmy is one of Pittsburgh's best blues guitarist. He went to the West Coast to record the CD,which features some of the best players from there. Kid Andersen produced it. It's going to be a great show but unfortunately,it will be harpless.Don't let that stop you. It will still be entertaining.
The Italian markets would be in an area called The Strip, close to the downtown area. You'll have a lot of fun there, although it can be pretty hectic on Saturdays.
Feel free to e-mail me if you need more info.

Thanks. That does look like a much better option than the other stuff I was looking at. You gonna be there?

That'll be a kick ass show. Jimmy is a great guy and one hell of a player. The place is small though and it will be packed!

"Excuses" on Carson Street is a fun place with live music. The program should be on their website. The Rhythm Aces have been playing a lot there lately. You can see some of their videos on YouTube to see what they're like.

Thanks! Got tickets for Friday night at Moondogs. We'll see you there, Tuckster. Looks like Excuses has a pretty early show on Sat. so we might stop there for dinner on our way out of town.

If you are at the Andy Warhol museum, and need a good place to eat near(ish) by, walk back over the bridge towards downtown and find "Proper Brick Oven and Pizza" (http://www.properpittsburgh.com/). Great pizza! Of course, you could always keep going to the classic PGH "Primanti Bros," but that might be overkill after stuffing yourself with Turkey the day before! Lol!

Sadly, I no longer live in the 'burgh, so I won't see ya there!

The Rhythm Aces show is somewhat of a semi pro invitational blues jam. Never know who might appear. Great saloon style joint. Good food at Excuses also. It's at 26th and Carson. I think they go on a 5:00 sat. Check the web...BN

Just wanted to give a shout out to Tuckster for the great suggestion for our Pittsburgh trip. Jimmy Adler is a great showman and a very talented guitar player/singer. It was also a lot of fun to meet and talk a little with Tuckster. I think he's the first forum member that I've met face-to-face. I hope there are more opportunities. Might have to check out SPAH or one of the other harmonica gatherings. Won't be our last trip to Pittsburgh, I'm sure!
