First off let me apologize for being to busy to research this. Ive looked on amazon and am overwhelmed at all the info. I play Hohner Marine bands, a few special twentys and Hohner crossover. Im leaning towards trying a different brand but don't know what harps are equivalent. I bought a golden melody to simply play, didn't like and have someone retune it to match a Marine Band. Ive done the same with suzukis. SO can some one tell me a few manufacturers that sell harps in the marine band tuning that play, bend and sound good/warm out of the box? I prefer wooden combs but not a deal breaker.

Only Hohner uses that particular compromised tuning... Try a Suzuki manji and a seydel 1847 (classic) if you want to but if you are too busy researching then maybe it's a waste of time AND money if you like the hohners... I prefer MB deluxe, myself...

Generally speaking you can get a decent diatonic once you get to the $30 price point or so. If you order a Bushman, do it from a reputable dealer like Rockin Rons (Bushman had supply problems that left customers waiting, but going to a good middleman will give you a good result). Seydel, Lee Oskar (Tombo makes Lee Oskar, you can get other models outside the U.S.), Hohner, and Suzuki are the good brands (with Bushman in that category if you get around their supply issues.) Hering makes good harps too, but I don't know anywhere that sells them at this point.

So, for a diatonic harp at the $30 level from any of those companies you should be good. You get nicer harps the more you play, but the $30 threshold gets you to something you can play at a professional level. With wooden combs more expensive harps make more difference. Older Marine Bands aren't sealed and the combs can swell a bit.

Good harps: (not an exhaustive list)
Hohner: Marine Band, Marine Band Deluxe, Marine Band Crossover, Golden Melody, Blues Harp (don't confuse it with the Blues Band which is rubbish), and the Special 20. (Probably forgetting some)

Lee Oskar (Don't know much about the other Tombos)

Seydel Blues Favorite, Session Steel, Blues Session (and other models)

Suzuki Manji (and other models)

If you are in the U.S. I'd suggest Rockin Rons. He's probably got the best selection of brands and models, good prices and great service and superhuman shipping times.

Which ones are compromised or just tuning?
Also, I found a heck of a deal and am thinking about Hammond HM20 but cant find the tuning, even on Suzuki website.?? I don't really like equal tuning I believe that is what the golden melodies are.

what do you all do on a 2-5 split draw? Doesn't it sound weird on equal or is it just me?

The Suzuki Hammond, Promaster, and Bluesharp are all tuned to ET, like the Golden Melody. The Manji is slightly Compromised, but pretty close to ET.

@undertheradar - this topic comes up about once a year in this forum. Use the forum seach function, for example, type "JI" or "7L Just Intonation"

Barbeque Bob shares a good link with the tempraments of different harps.

Seydel is pretty close to 19L JI.

under the radar, a hering would probably be what you are looking for.

also,if you have existing suzukis thatyou don't like, you can get just tuned reeds from rockin' rons.

at this point ,D and low F are available
http://rockinronsmusicsd.com/suzuki-reed-plate-set-for-fabulous-just-tuning-f-20j.html

also, gnarly, the US suzuki technician ,can tune you a suzuki to just intonation.

once in a while you will see someone claim that bushman and suzuki harpmaster uses an ET. maybe at one time they did,but the ones i get are a compromise tuning.

the old soul's voice, not the modern one, used a just tuning.

hering had two different versions of just.both were good to my ear,but i did prefer the master blues to the vintage for everything except acoustic chordal chugging.

you might even like the tuning on a hohner blue midnight.

my own version of the compromise tuning is this:

when i get stuck with an ET harp,i just slightly flatten the thirds to the I & IV chords.

it is a pretty quick procedure.
