talk about politically correct blues. i posted a documentary on don baker a true bluesman. it was filmed for television. it tells a story on a part of his upbringing. i suppose if he had white, suburban middle class background and never had anything bad happen to him then it would be ok to post. if his mom took him to soccer practice and he rode his bicycle to little league, then we could talk about it.
we can spend days talking about a silly ass side vent on a cover plate, but post a video on a well known harp player, who went to what amounts to prison at a very young age, nope that is against the rules.
i was not in the least offended by any of the comments, but then again i am an adult.
that film was powerful and upsetting, perhaps not fit for children. let's just sweep it under the rug.
@1847 I'm with you on this one. I think this goes more to how formed as a blues man than religion. I think of this is more of a cultural and social top. ----------
I see no problem with the video itself, though it is semi OT. It tells a disturbing story from the not-too-distant past. Many alive today have experienced similar abusive "treatment" settings designed to "help" overcome behavior problems in youths.
Despite the thread being locked, the video is still there for any interested viewers.
However, the responses to the video clearly violated the forum creed as noted below the video. The contents of posts were already very opinionated about religion to the extent that any additional responses would only escalate the thread to increasingly abusive exchanges. Such discussions go nowhere productive on a forum focused on Modern Blues Harmonica. That is why the issue of discussions of religion is specifically addressed in the creed.
I support the lock. Thanks for posting the video. ----------

Talk about an oxymoron. While I respect the major domo's and moderators' desire to keep some semblance of civility in the forum, I can't help but ponder the irony of a blues forum which once had a thread lamenting the "microaggressions" that were taking place. I can just see some grizzled old bluesman on a front porch somewhere in Mississippi going "micro-WHAT ?????? "

1847, dougharps is right on the money on this one. I'm listening to the video right now (it was already locked by the time I logged on), and it's very interesting, but the thread was going to explode pretty quickly.
The video was powerful stuff, indeed, and Baker is an able musician, but I already noticed the beginnings of rants about religion that , from my experience, lead not to civil discussion but high pitched hyperbole, vitriol and various sorts of damnations and counter damnations. A bluesman's tale, yes, but there is a larger subject looming over this board's message board concentration which is controversial and beneficial to no one. Locking the thread was a prudent move. ---------- Ted Burke tburke4@san.rr.com
You posted a 43-minute video with no clue as to why. The discussion immediately veered off to the "one topic where", as it says on the main forum page, "we have, unfortunately, proven our inability to remain civil or respect each other's differences."
Maybe if you'd have bothered telling us who this "well-known" (I've never heard of him) former inmate was and what it all has to do with blues harmonica you might have got a better outcome.

Many thanks to the moderators--several of them--who shut down the other thread, which was clearly heading in the wrong direction.
1847, if I wanted to, I could start many threads about the devil and the blues, since I've just spent seven years writing a book about the subject. But I refrain from doing so, because the creed is clear about the subject, and because I know that people here just don't know how to behave. If I post something about the devil and the blues, somebody is bound to start talking about God, or Allah, or intolerant religionists who demonize others, and pretty soon things turn ugly. I wish this forum weren't like that, but it is.
As for the white, suburban, middle-class thing: I have no idea what you're talking about. This forum takes great interest in people who have had bad things happen to them, regardless of their race, their regional origins, or their class position. I vigorously encourage discussion by, and about, people who have had bad things happen to them.

for many of us here the blues is going to a steak house and having the waitress come back telling us they are out of A1 steak sauce. i posted the video because i thought that it would be of interest to others. as opposed to how Gmaj7 would say........... 4 draw and a headshake.
check out the video of don, playing hootchie cootchi man, check out that he is playing to a full house watch the crowd they are eating it up, somewhat reminiscence of the george smith video
i consider most of the people here to be friends, i choose to hang here everyday but very few will i get a chance to meet. if indigo post something, i am not offended it is a chance to get to know him just a little bit. i know how i feel and what i think i appreciate comments even if they are diametrically opposite of my own views.
Not quite sure what makes him a "true bluesman." Pretty sure that having a rough childhood and going to prison doesn't qualify - might just mean you screwed up or did something against the law. I had never heard of Don Baker but he seems (based on this video) a relatively poor harp player and an average singer. The George Smith comparison is painful.
The discussion about political correctness raises its head at regular intervals and religion is too inflammatory for most to have a civilized discussion about, unfortunately.

I must apologise guys to those offended by my posts I did weigh in pretty heavy and inflame a topic/thread I feel very strongly about (I have done this in the real world with real people as well...lot's of times)but I directed my posts very broadly and with a little humour and at no one particular person on this forum. Sorry for breaking the forum creed also I just think that the subject of blues, religion, prison and any of form however mild or extreme of oppression are/were valid and pertinent subjects on a forum that does largely deal with the blues and all that that entails however I realise it should be more about a musician and playing blues harmonica. For me personally, not reading or taking part in thread is easy as is going to a new tab, turning off my PC or similar I do not have enough hate in me to attack others but prefer to express my own opinion read others and that's that. ----------
"Those British boys want to play the blues real bad, and they do"
As long as the words pop up on my tele-prompter, or better yet my ipad I am good to go.
You’ll have to excuse me, but I need to run to the market: I need a little Coffee-mate, and some artificial sweetener. seeing as I am clean out of cream and sugar.

Lately the browser here has crashed every time I hit a video button so I missed that one. Whole nother topic, but I did want to say I've been on several sides of similar subjects since I arrived here when the doors first swung open. I believe 1847 had decent intentions with posting a particular video. But Adam is right, we as a group tend to get wound up pretty quickly if there is a perceived sensitive topic. I have learned to take care what I post and how I respond to things I see posted.
Many of us have come from places and lives where we did in fact experience hard times and the resulting feelings known as blues. My Catholic school experiences probably don't hold a patch to that guy's life experience but other things did mold my outlook and emotional life at an early age. When I first heard blues music I was home in my heart. There is where I found my peace. I think this is maybe true for lots of people, or we would not have the music or this joint in common.
I still tip my hat to the mods here and Adam. I also tip my hat to people who take a chance sometimes. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
He's actually playing Mannish Boy riff. Not Hoochie Coochie Man. Even starts with Everything Gonna Be All Right .... this morning."
