Skype users and sound people please help! I have many Skype students. One has been taking for years. Suddenly, for about a month he has been experiencing extreme feedback on his end. He is the only one. It is a windy sound, which I've experienced before, but never to this degree. I have two mics and normally switching whenever it gets windy always solves the issue, but not this time and not with such intense feedback. We tried him using headphones, which solved the feedback issue, but I could no longer listen to his computer's backing track music while he jammed. I have suggested he putting his band in a box into his second computer, but for some reason he is saying that will not work.We have a trouble shooting session set up for tomorrow. I use two computers. One is old and we cannot seem to run the internet through it, but I use it for my band in a box. One is new, I use it for Skype and backing tracks via youtube. Therefore I have two sets of speakers, which although one of them sends out sound ONLY when I am playing Band in a Box, both sets of speakers have been turned on throughout our lessons. I will start by moving around the speakers in case my mic is picking up their sound and creating a feedback loop. Then I will try turning off the Band in a Box speakers completely. Then I will try headphones through my new computer, only turning on the Band in a Box speakers when necessary. I have gotten a third mic which I will have facing away from my speakers sent through the blue icycle system. He has a Windows 7 desktop, I have a Mac OSX 10.7.5. Any ideas?

My brother and I have that problem, and for us, we found the problem was that he had an aftermarket cooling fan that he sets under his laptop. You can't hear it until the internal mic on his laptop amplifies it. (And he can use his gf's aftermarket fan with no problem- her's is a better model). We have him turn it off when we are on skype. It's made worse by the fact that he usually uses his laptop's speakers, creating a loop, and always uses his laptop's mic.
We had a similar problem, to a lesser degree, with my Yeti and my desktops fan. Moving the Yeti to the far side of the desk seemed to fix that, although sometimes some papers get up against the side of the desktop and I get a low hum.
I think putting more stuff on fewer computers would be a good idea. Ideally, to reduce the sound levels the most you'd both have headphones on and they'd be the only speakers running in the room. I'm not sure how you'd run the band in a box into your Skype call, but I'm sure it can be done. (I'll poke around a bit and see if I can figure it out). My first step though would be to look for any fans that could be causing noise. The way we finally isolated the problem was with a three person call. We'd selectively mute one mic at a time to see what end the problem was starting on. (My air conditioner also feeds back through my brother's computer speakers, so when my AC comes on I hear it, plus the roaring feedback loop on his end.)
