Hi guys. We noticed a few more posts than usual on the main page with things for sale. I'd just like to remind people to put listings in the for sale thread instead of starting a thread. It leaves more space for other conversations to stay on the front page that way, and makes it easier for people looking for your listing to find it. Although it's no big deal when one or two people do it here or there it can quickly get out of hand. If you want special permission for something big like a new product launch let us know and we'll usually be accomodating.
Thanks, nate

I think that what happens is folks can't find the FS thread. Same with forum search , WTB and For trade.

Hey Nate . . . just a suggestion... for what it's worth.
A lot of times folks don't read stuff too closely when there's lots of text (I usually attribute that tendency to the Internet . . . as people now tend to skim).
Maybe it would help if the sentence on the main page referencing the FOR SALE link was a few point sizes larger than the other text. ---------- America's foremost Demotivational Speaker.

In all fairness, this is an unusual forum.
Most forums have a selection of sub-forums dedicated to specific topics, i.e. "Harmonica Repair," or "Amplifier Discussion", along with a "For Sale" section, and the sub-forums are listed on the forum's home-page, so members can select where to post. Not so here.
Not a complaint, just an observation.

Barley, you can always find a link to the for sale thread on a link at the top of the forum page, on the forum how to page and on the thread organizer in my link!
Rontana, yeah, it can blend together a bit, but if we bolded/capt/large printed all the parts we wanted people to read we'd get accused of bolding and capping everything (and the templates are a bit of a pain.) There are only three links in the forum creed section, and one of them is for the for sale page, and it is bolded. Maybe we need a snazzier way to present the forum creed, like a flow chart? :) There is a fair amount of information there, and you can't call attention to one part without dragging it away from the others.
Dr.Hoy, we had a section for for sale, but it didn't get enough traffic and people stopped posting there much. Having the one thread allows that thread to hit the main page without flooding the main page. We've debated, in the past, splitting this into subsections but decided that one of the things that makes the forum vibrant is the mixing of old timers and noobs, generalists and specialists all in one big pool.
Like I said, it's not a huge deal, but when we let it slide, invariably down the road someone will abuse the privilege, and when we call them out on it, they'll point to all the other for sale pages and claim we are singling them out. I'm just trying to stay ahead of the problem before it gets out of hand.

All due respect, but I don't see how that follows. I've not seen a forum that divides its members into "old timers, noobs, generalists and specialists." You're aware, of course, of how all the other forums organize their sub-sections onto a "table of contents"; why not do that here?
Again, not complaining, only asking.

Dr.Hoy, what I'm saying is that specifically by not making smaller sub sections it forces people to interact more broadly on the forum, which means the amp guys are more likely to comment on the harp customizer pages, and the guys who don't care what's under the hood may mix with the guys who want custom combs. We did look into alternatives. I'm partial, myself, to forums that let you tag threads with topics, where if you go to the main page you see everything but you can filter the results to get a more refined list, but the software the forum runs on doesn't support that. We can, at best, make separate sub forums. Each one could have the same members, but the posts would be exclusive to each one (like the blues jam page). We found that people still clumped to the main forum, which meant the sub forums got less traffic than if they were on the front page.
(I have, by the way, actually seen forums that lump people into groups. A lot of gaming forums have sections where guides help newcomers figure out how everything works without them getting blown up by the experts (to be fair, the experts in that world tend to be foul mouthed tweens, so maybe it's more important there!) (Uh oh, I think I just had my first get off my lawn moment! (well, second, neighborhood kids were running shopping carts down the hill today...) Actually, at one point we tried using tags like the OT marker for beginner threads, but they didn't get enough traffic and people stopped using them.
What it ultimately comes down to is the software just doesn't support that much more than what we offer. For example, look at my thread organizer- it's just a list of threads, in a thread that references other threads of interest. It was the only way I could think to allow other people to update things like lists of customizers, but like many things, it doesn't get enough traffic. The front page is where this forum lives and breathes. ---------- Nate Facebook Thread Organizer (A list of all sorts of useful threads)
