Several months ago there was a thread regarding a digital tipping app. I even signed up for it but never used it and can't remember what it was called. Can someone please remind me?

What brought this to mind, our bass player has a buddy who just developed an app called banddollars.com. I signed up for that more more less as a beta tester but one thing buried in the small print is that 50% is taken in fees. 30% to either Google Play or iTunes, depending on your phone, and 20% to banddollars. I found two or three similar services but couldn't find their fees. Does anybody know if 50% is the going rate for this sort of service?

The site was Gotip, but it seems to be down. Here are a couple threads, including some other possibilities.

I'm guessing this idea died on the vine. Do we know the reason?

Thanks for letting me know that gotip.it is down! I didn't know. I'll email Ralf Schwoebel, the Tradebit CEO, and ask what's up.

The Gotip thing was my idea and I had a flaming weekend of brainstorming on it--trying to address the fact that The Blues Doctors were being stiffed by young people in the bar we were playing. We'd walk around with the tip bucket and they'd say, "I don't carry cash." How can you beat that? I got Ralf to create a beta website. Next time we had a gig and the kids tried that trick, I said, "Do you have a smart phone?"

"Sure."

I held up a QR code. "Scan this."

It took them right to the page where they could give us a $1, $2, or "big" tip.

The kids just looked at me, embarrassed, and did nothing.

That depressed me. I decided that my whole vision of digital tipping overtaking the world of young hipsters was doomed.

I was convinced that there could be big money in this.

Part of the problem is that micropayments, at least at that time, did in fact suffer from confiscatory fees.

Perhaps that has changed.

I've still got a big detailed document explaining how somebody who starts a digital tipping website can make millions. Please contact me offline if you're interested in taking the lead. I don't want to do the hard work; I just want my % and the right to share in the brainstorming.

I've just looked at Banddollars.com. That's very much what I had in mind. Have your friend contact me if he wants a whole palette of ideas and is willing to pay for them. I can tell you for a fact that the 50%-in-fees model is ridiculous and unsustainable. Your bass player's friend will lose. It won't work.
