I recently came across a couple of NOS GE 5V4GA recifier tubes. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is ok to use these in a bassman RI, without damaging it. As near as I can tell from research, they are somewhere between a 5AR4 and a 5U4GB which are both fine to use, but the 5V4GA has a lower plate voltage or something, and I am a little scared to try one in it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Both 5AR4 (225mA) & 5U4GB (275mA) have a higher dc output rating, if your amp is biased for either, then a 5V4GA (175mA...your amp can pull more than this) should drop in...however it's not as sturdy & may die in less than a normal timespan. Carry spare fuses (of the correct type & rating - a blown rectifier will burn up a fuse when it goes) and a spare rectifier.
To be honest, even if it sounded killer, if I wanted a looser sound than a 5AR4 I'd skip the 5V4 'middle man' and go for a 5U4GB, as they tend to be pretty bulletproof.
5V4 could be an option for cathode biased amps & 6V6 amps, it has a slow warm up (like 5AR4) so good if there's no standby switch, if replacing a 5Y3 you'd need to rebias the amp cooler - don't just drop it in. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

So Mark...in other words, BF Princetons & Deluxes would make good candidates for a 5V4? ----------

Maybe more the RI's, as they run higher volts so less current, especially with Russian tubes, but more thinking tweed deluxes, earlier tweed & brown Princetons with 5Y3, cathode biased 2x6L6 amps etc.
Otherwise it's not really a tube I go looking for, but hey, if you happen by one you may as well use it. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness
