I got the following a few minutes ago, cc'd to lots of other folks:

From: Adam Gussow
Subject: From Adam Gusssow

Hi!
How are you?

Have you seen this before? http://.org/days.php
Oprah had been using it for over a year!

Adam Gussow

Anyone else get this? Needless to say, don't open the link!

Hmmmm. What email address did it come from? This morning I found it impossible to sign on to my AOL account. An hour later I signed on just fine.

I'm going to change my password right now and run a malware scan.

Actually, it's more likely, despite the header, that the email did NOT come from my account, but instead harvested my name from somebody else's hacked account.

One can open an email such as this and click "reply" to see the actual address from which the email originated.

One thing we know for sure - it didn't come from Lindsey Graham. :)

It's not from the bosses email, but that does leave the question of who got hacked, since it seems to have gone out to a cluster of people on the forum (I got one too).

If you ever think you've been hacked, make sure you reset your password, and also check to make sure in your options that you aren't forwarding to any unknown emails. That's usually not on the front page of your email info and someone who has gotten access to your account can automatically forward your email to themselves (including confirmation of password changes).

Aside from making sure it's not from a trusted account hitting reply will give you the spammer's email, but they probably just cut and pasted into a burner account.

I got the email too. It looked suspicious to me, so I did not click the link.

Does anyone know what the link leads to?

Understand, too, that nobody needs to hack any account to send mail pretending to come from you. They only need your email address, which is easily harvested from a variety of sources. So while keeping your accounts secure and regularly changing your *strong* passwords is still very important, it won't do anything to stop this from happening.

I forgot to mention, I have received the identical email many times, seemingly sent from a variety of real and fictitious email addresses. So yes, it is definitely a scam. The fact that there's no information in the email indicating they have any idea who you are (the email address doesn't count) is a good indicator that it's a scam.

The bottom line is, don't ever click on a link that anybody sends in email unless you're damn sure it's legitimate. And maybe not even then. The world is full of scumbags, and scumbags now have global reach.

"nobody needs to hack any account to send mail pretending to come from you. They only need your email address, which is easily harvested from a variety of sources."

If that's the case, Garry, why in this particular case are the people receiving fake emails from me people who happen to be in my AOL address book?

I think is is common for hackers to get data from address books on a PC or mail server. That does not contradict Garry's statement.
