I see there are a fair few people making custom combs, a handful making custom cover plates / cover plate covers, but how about people making custom reeds?

I'd be interested to know if anyone does this?

While we are at it why not let me know your favourite makers of combs and cover plates too?

Thanks!

Estragon. Of all the components to make, reed plates and reeds are easily the bighgest challenge. That is why even though there are a lot of custom harps being offered in the market, they are all built with reed plates made by one of the Big 3 - Hohner, Seydel or Suzuki. It is cost prohibitive to get into the reed making business as compared with simply buying them.

i started messing with harps by mixing different brands of harp parts. for example, putting hohner combs in hering harmonicas and vis a vis.

i like andrew zajac combs, and hetrick combs .it was because hetrick combs aren't easily available anymore that i sought out zajac and blue moon combs, and found this forum

i am extremely excited about blue moon combs and am looking forward to using them in the near future.

i did not know there were any custom cover plates, other than powder coated plates that are otherwise made by major harmonica companies.oh,and turbolids.

if you could point out any custom coverplates ,i would be interested.

i tend to use hering, hohner, suzuki, bushman and soul's voice cover plates for most applications.

i used to love putting kay chicago blues covers on pre-MS blues harps and marine bands. a funny joke on other players :)

Harrison gave reeds a shot. Of course, they didn't make it.

Shakeylee, there are some guys out there making custom wood covers. Turboharps turbolids would fall into that category too. I think maybe Matthew Smart might have been experimenting with Corian covers, and of course there are a few guys who make modifications to covers.

oops,i should also have mentioned that i am very interested in the blow your brass off 270 comb.
that will be a purchase soon.

FR farrell used to sell a replacement comb for 270's,which i think eezyreeder bought all of.i have not seen them on the market even though i buy things from eezyreeder.

i also think that if someone came out with a steel comb, maybe in 1095 but plated with chrome,or copper flashed for MB with threaded holes where the nails go,they could make a killing.that way you would not have to drill though or tap anything.

There was a guy a couple months back who posted that he was making stainless combs. I don't remember his name.

yes,i have seen stainless combs, and that would work too.

the important thing would be the threads lined up with where the brad holes are on MB plates. so they didn't go all the way through, maybe halfway through.

i'm not even a hohner user,so i don't even know why i'm thinking of it,haha

Thanks for the info.

shakeylee - the only custom covers I know of are the ones you mentioned (anodised and turbo) plus the wooden ones I've heard of.
