Hi all, new to the forum. Has anyone ever heard of or seen a harp called the Hohnerband, I believe it's from the mid 1920's or earlier. 10 hole diatonic, it looks just like an early marine band except it says hohnerband on the top cover plate. The bottom cover plate has the small star, jagged cuffs, the single circles and DEM VERDIENSTE is spelled out and not abbreviated DM. Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the forum.

I hadn't heard of that one before. I was able to find a picture on Reverb.com.

Does that look like yours? If your's is like that it looks like it is probably an octave harp or a tremolo harp. (In the picture, see how it has two rows of holes instead of just one- that's a sign of a tremolo or octave harp, although some other weird variations may exist, particularly on older harps.)

It is for Hohner Marine Bands, but Pat Missin has a page on his site that goes through all the variations and style changes, and some of them might apply to your harp too.

If someone here doesn't know more he'd be the one to ask. How does it sound? (Assuming it looks clean enough to put near your mouth!)

Hey nacoran, thanks for the reply. No, it's not an octave harp. It looks just like a marine band/old standby pre war. I know it's old, mid 1920's. I would post pics but can't figure out how at this site. It doesn't have the mouse ears but doesn't have the straight edge either where the nails are put on the cover plates, sort of rounded like mouse ears but one piece of metal across the reed plates, sort of hard to explain. How do you post pics here?

A few weeks ago I posted a copy of the 1936 Hohner Catalogue. Here it is again.

I have run across the Hohner Band a few times while searching for vintage harps. I've never found one in very good condition. I do have one that has very tarnished covers. The one that I have does not have the curved shape like the one pictured in the 1936 catalogue. It has the shape of a typical 10- hole diatonic. It is on my "One of these days when I have time..........." list of things to do.

Here's my take. Based upon the pricing I have seen - it is less expensive than the Marine Band which might indicate that it isn't quite the quality of a Marine Band. However, given that Hohner produced millions of the Marine Band 1896 chassis - the reed plates and comb - but changed the covers to create different marketing opportunities - it is probably a very good harp - perhaps as good as the coveted pre-war Marine Bands.

Tom, I can't get the image to display.

Garry, if you upload the picture to a site like Photobucket or Flikr you can right click on the image and get the image url and either just post it or use embedding code. (There are instructions on the forum how to page).

Nate: It is actually a slide show. I can see it fine on Chrome. What browser are you using? Here is a link to the catalogue that you can click on and view each page one at a time. The Hohner Band is on page 4.

I figured it out. Apparently even though I've got adblock supposedly set to ignore ads on this page it was running and it thinks anything interactive like a slide show is an ad. (Something seems to be up with it. I tried disabling it twice yesterday on the whole domain to see if that was the issue. It worked today when I just disabled it for this page.)

I think the 'Up to Date' is the funniest named harp I've seen. Maybe the context has changed but up to date sounds so average and dated. I suppose 'The Bleeding Edge' might not be a great name for a harp either though!
