http://madison.craigslist.org/msg/4879819639.html (Edit: It's a Ampeg Jet II J-12R in case you don't want to bother with the link!)
I'm not particularly serious about it, but it grabbed my attention because a friend of mine has an Ampeg Gemini I that I enjoy playing. I don't have a lot of experience playing amplified, so I'm always interested in playing though different amps. This one being somewhat close has me thinking that it might be kinda fun to go check out.
...unless anyone can raise some red flags that would make it a waste of time.
Just curious.

No. What changes is done? - You don't know what is modified in it. What speaker is it? Maybe they have done so much and it is no Ampeg Jet II J-12R no more? If you're a ampnerd like me you could give a few bucks for it. But if you're not. -let it be.. A original Ampeg Jet II J-12R have a very nice tone for harp!

Absolutely yes- Why not check it out. U cant buy much for that low asking price
He said it is modified for jazz and he is playing an Ibanez hollowbody, That means he probably like clean and good headroom before breakup
Have him ditch the crate and put it back in the original cabinet
Its never gonna be a collector so if it plays well its a winner
A reissue is over $500 and who knows what an original you would be afraid to take out would cost?

I would go buy it. Too far of a drive for me though.
The add does not say it is modded for jazz, it says it sound good for jazz. The only mod talked about in the add is the cabinet.
I think you should take a mic and a harp and go check it out.
I would use this for guitar if I did not like it's sound for harp.

Shoot... I knew I shouldn't have asked. :) Now I really want it! Despite what seems like a really low asking price, I really don't have the money to be spending on an amp.
I didn't get the chance to check it out this weekend, but I sent the guy an email asking if I could look at it next weekend if it is still available. If it IS still for sale by then, I think I might take it as a sign, suck it up, and bring some cash just in case...

Shoot from the hip -borrow $200 and head over there- tell him its all you got and see what happens. those are good playing amps in general and wouldnt think it would stick around long.

Ampeg never made a Jet II in the 60's. It more likely an 80's with EL84 power tubes and reasonably crappy for harp.

Don't know why folks diss EL84's. I have a bunch of gig ready amps here and 2 of my favorites have EL84's Those tubes have a little more bite and are more "In your face" nothing wrong with them or RI amps in general IMO. The seller said this Ampeg was a good jazzer. That means lower gain with warmth. Perfect for harp. Also, Ampeg has the best reverb in the business. As far as waiting goes, you snooze, you loose...BN

No. Absolutely not. You should never check out an amp without the MBH forum seal of approval. After all, how many members of the MBH forum have you ever heard play through an amplifier? You should always place blind trust in people who you have never met, nor heard play. Why would you ever question a persons credentials?
Of course, you should try it. Why wouldn't you? Some Ampeg amps are great harp amps. $225 is not a lot of money. Worst case, put it back the way it was and sell it to a guitar player and make a few extra bucks.

On the subject of EL84's it depends on who makes them. The gold standard for those are NOS Mullards for the British sound and NOS Tung Sols for the American sound and many old Gibsons came with Tung Sols. There are reissues of both of those now and TAD has one that I haven't tried but some have told me that this one sounds almost like a set of 6V6's but having not tried them yet I can't confirm that.
Some of those old Ampegs had some awesome reverb units in them. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Barley is right! Sano and Lectrolab are two that had models equipped with EL84's that are great harp amps.
The Lectrolab 700C is one of the best 30-35 watters out there for harp.

Agreed. EL84's can be awesome harp tubes. Kalamazoo's, EVJ's, R500C's, Sano-ette's, etc...
Another couple good EL84 brands are Raytheons and Telefunkens. ----------

Ha Ha, I was speaking of my Lectrolab R500C, and my Burness inspired SFSI EL84 1x10 Honker (home build). Another was my Excalibur Citation (Sano). You can't believe everything you read on the web. You have to use your ears, on a stage, with a band! ...BN
Oh yah, Forgot about my Zoo 2. Fantastic small amp!

Thanks for all the input everyone. I've really enjoyed the discussion that has unfolded here.
When I first contacted the seller he said there was another guy interested who he was waiting to hear back from. Today he said:
"...so the other buyer is coming over on Friday to check out the amp. He seems pretty serious about it but who knows. I'll let you know if the sale falls through. BTW, no other mods to the amp." (I asked about other mods.)
Needless to say, I am not keeping my figures crossed. Nevertheless, this whole thing has me thinking that I might actually seriously be in the market for something like this. As I snoop around, be prepared to field a lot more dumb questions from a guy how knows very little about tube amps... AKA me...
Thanks again! T.Bird

The other guy backed out. I went and tried it out. I liked it a lot. It is in incredible condition. I bought it for $200. I am one happy dude.
Happy Valentine's Day to me!
