I have a question about the volume of the seydel SS (and like to debate non-vented harps only for this thread).

I like a sp20 as much as the next guy. However I find their volume too muffled for anything more than home-practice. By volume I am probably actually referring to dynamics. SP20 just don't have the ability to really scream like a marine band or a GM. You can't really breathe through them somehow.

GM's I like. Especially with a corian comb on the low keys. They do 'open up'.

Now I wonder if the seydel SS might be in my ballpark (for the sub G keys and maybe more if Hohner keeps it's prices like they are... My boycot continues..). I'm worried because of the recessed reedplates (which might make is more like the sp20??).

Anyone tried the Seydel SS that understands what I'm looking for? Is it there or not?

I've played the Blues Session (brass reeds) and Blues Favorites with both brass and steel reeds, but not the Session Steel. (As well as GM's and Sp20s). The Sp20, out of all of them, I'd consider the least 'bright' tone wise- the least treble. I suspect it's because of the relatively closed back. Pure volume I leave to the amp, but opening up the covers on a Sp20 will give you a brighter tone. If I had to guess why the GM sounds bright, despite a fairly tight back, I'd guess it's the difference between it's Equal Temperament vs. the other's Compromise Tuning. To my ear ET sounds a little crisper (especially on single notes)- not exactly the same thing as brightness, but related in that both make it sound less muddy.

Thanks for the feedback.

I retune my GM's, so that's not the reason for them being louder..

And I've opened up the backs of some sp20. Makes a very small difference to my ears.

My SP20s and Session Steels both project a nice loud sound, but maybe not quite as loud as my Crossovers. But as Nate said, I let the amp or PA give me the volume.

Also, I think there is a difference between the loudness we hear as players, and the loudness perceived by the listener across the room. As an experiment, stand at one end of long hallway and play different harps. Have someone stand at the other end and listen for volume differences. I doubt there is too much difference between a SP20 and a GM to that listener.

Try opening up the cover plates of the Spec 20.
