maybe this might bring the cost of a simple SP 20 to a more reasonable price AGAIN.

@stones: "maybe this might bring the cost of a simple SP 20 to a more reasonable price AGAIN."

I highly doubt it. Prices never go down. They only go up. I imagine this buyout will come, eventually, with another price hike.

Not always true. Back in the early 90's a decent guitar cost at minimum $400. Today you can get one for $200 or even less. I watch the price of a slice of pizza go from 25¢ back in the 70's, all the way to $3. But today, you can get one for a dollar.

Hohner only sold their North American distributor, which was the "middle man" between Hohner and the American retailers. There was very little economic value added by the distribution company, so merging with KHS will create increased efficiency through scale. In theory that will mean a lower cost of distribution, and better supply chain fulfillment. This will likely translate into better in-store availability in America. The cost savings will likely go to Hohner shareholders, although it does create an opportunity to lower retail prices in the US, if they choose to do that.

Anyway, retail prices in the US should drop this year simply due to exchange rate changes. The US$ has gained 20% against the € over the past 6 months. So German-made harps from Hohner and Seydel can/might/should become 20% cheaper in US$ terms this year. Let's see...

Taiwan based KHS already own half of Hohner, and have done so for some years.
