I bought a Huffler last night. Its a neat little contraption that muffles the volume on your harmonica. You can still hear what you are playing, but it lowers the volume. Its kind of like a sock/beer koozie that fits around your harp.

I love the logo!

I was just looking at something similar from TurboHarp:
Sottovoce
It seems like a great idea! ----------

The Huffler works with any harp. Its inventor is Ricky Trankle, one of Filisko's mob. He's called "The Harmonica Einstein" because he looks like Einstein. He's a nice guy, and you especially should check out his Tuning Table. It supports reeds for tuning while they are on the comb.

Cool idea! Also, looks to me like if you popped a small hole in the back of it, you could fit a mic in that pocket, and you'd have an "automatic tight cupping" effect going on. Do you think that would work, Phil?

Isaac, it might work. It cups the harp so tight that when I blew hard on holes 1-3 some of the higher draw notes sounded. The material used is pretty soft for sound absorbing, though.

So the Huffler works well, then? I could use this and practice in my apartment more often. ---------- Marc Graci YouTube Channel

I bought this immediately after reading this thread. I could have used this so many times in the past...I have even tried using shirts, but it doesn't work very well. Whoever made this could have been a multi-millionaire if only more people played the harmonica.

Way back when, there was a fellow selling a harp-to-bullet mic coupler on Ebay. It was said to replicate the tone on a tight cup. It was simply a leather sleeve that was hemmed at both openings. Stuff the harp in one side then the GB mic in the other. The mic was close to the harp. Looked pretty good to me but never tried it. There are obvious drawbacks as a lack of hand control but someone was thinking. I can see where the Huffler would be useful. Sweet...BN

...Also does anyone know how well it dampens the shrill sounds of blow bending and crappy squealing overblows? Those are the sounds I am always most worried about bothering people with, yet I feel like a device like this would have a hard time covering higher register stuff like that.

Just got my Huffler. After playing for just a few minutes, it does a pretty good job of masking the sound. It's nothing revolutionary. Think of it as a really airtight cup. Great players could probably do it entirely with their hands. But I am not a great player. So this enables me to play a bit more in my apartment without feeling bad for the neighbors. ---------- Marc Graci YouTube Channel
