I meant to post this earlier in the day, but it was 25 years ago today, 1/7, that I began playing the harmonica. :)

In 1990 I had about 2 weeks of piano lessons before the doctor told me I had to quit or end up needing surgery. Aside from learning Twinkle Twinkle Little start on a Blessing tremolo my grandmother brought back from a trip to China and, when my wrists had recovered a bit learning the MASH theme song and When Johnny Comes Marching Home on guitar before my wrists flared back up I was out of the instrument game for more than a decade after that. Then, around this time of year several years back I decided to give harmonica a serious shot. I needed to get at least good enough so I could figure out what note I was singing so I could write down the pitch for songs I was singing/writing. In retrospect I could have bought a tuner, but I'm glad I chose harmonica!

Todd, I hope by the time I hit the 25 year mark I can play at least half as well as you. :)

You have certainly accomplished much in 25 years. I learned about you through the forum, and have been fortunate to see you perform twice. You may not remember our phone conversation a couple of years ago, but the advice and pointers you gave me have really helped me along my harp journey. Thank You and Best Wishes for your continued success.

Thank you all for the kind words! I really appreciate all of my friends in the harp community and on this forum.

@Destin - I used to practice for hours on end, but I don't have as much time these days. I try to play as much as I can - hard to determine an average. When I am not playing, I'm either whistling or playing some rhythm in my head.

Todd, don't think of it as just 25 years... Think of it as a QUARTER OF A CENTURY!

I really enjoy your use of melody in playing and your interpretations of songs when you improvise. You use your technical skills on harmonica to make really good music.

Congratulations on reaching this temporal landmark!

My last comment went into the gutter and may show up. I'll be a little bit more wordy on this just to make sure that my question is asked, if not answered. How can you nail the date? Mine is a little foggy but it's twice your starting date at least. I used your playing as an example when I ordered my first custom harp within the past year. I gave the fella two versions of 'Amazing Grace'. One was how I play and your version was how I'd like to play. Totally from the heart without busyness. Your music, may I say as a wobbler, is absolutely beautiful.

Congratulations Todd. You are a tremendous asset to the world of music with your harmonica playing. A true blessing.

@Destin - don't be deceived. I spent a fair amount of time with Todd at SPAH two years ago. The boy ALWAYS has a harp in his mouth. He's always working on something. Quietly, but in between sentences in a conversation, he's playing.

How can I remember the date so well? It's because we had a guest speaker scheduled from 1/2-1/7 at the church I was attending back then, and there was a calendar on the back wall that stayed up all year. I bought my first harmonica from him, a Huang Sivertone Deluxe, that last night, 1/7/90, and always remembered the date because I passed that calendar a zillion times the rest of the year. I guess the date just stuck with me.

Thanks again, everyone!
