Sad. I have huge respect, as a blues scholar, fan, and player, for what Cream did to and with the blues. They made the blues something new, different, and exciting. In the language of the time, they were white men playing the black man's music--that's the way people spoke back then--except they weren't just copying it, badly; they were innovating, expanding, creating a new thing called blues-rock, or acid-rock, or heavy metal. They were doing all three things. We need more musicians, and more blues musicians, like that. (Butterfield was another in this class.)
Here's my favorite Cream video on YouTube:

I can walk down the street, there's no one there Though the pavements are one huge crowd I can drive down the road, my eyes don't see Though my mind wants to cry out loud
I feel free
Thanks, Jack!

Above all else, Jack Bruce was as good a musician that his generation every produced. He was easily the most significant bassist of his generation who created what I regard as fantastic and exciting improvisations with Cream; Clapton hasn't come near to playing that well since the band disbanded. "Train Time" was relased on Wheels of Fire in 1968 , not long after I first picked up harmonica , and the track was for me what "Whammer Jammer" or "Room to Move" was to others a few later. It was something I hadn't heard before, along with Butterfield my entree into blues harmonica, it was something that I listened to endlessly, deterimined to learn it. Bruce, of course, was not a harmonica player mainly, being a multi instrumentalist in fact, but the rhythmic , gutsy sound he made with that thing got me hooked and kept me hooked. Thank you, Mr. Bruce, and godspeed.

Maybe the most significant ROCK bassist. Not to take away Bruce's accomplishments, but Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, and Ron Carter are examples of significant jazz bassists, with Jaco being far and away a more significant bassist than Jack Bruce, in my opinion. And on the rock side, John Entwistle gives him a run for his money. But as you said, if "his generation" is pre-Jaco Pastorius, you may have a point.

@ATT1CHGO:What the fuck is the point of your post? This man is dead yesterday and you're already pissing on his memory. If you want an argument, go talk to your wife. ---------- ---- ted-burke.com tburke4@san.rr.com

I agree Ted
I guess if u wanna be picky- Jaco and clarke are post Bruce and Carter is the tail end of Bop
The Ox was a great player but probably not as multi dimensional as Jack Bruce
Certainly all these men have have earned respect
Objection over ruled
RIP Mr. Bruce

Hey Ted -
First of all, I am not married.
But what is your problem, you old fart? This is a constant problem that you have on this Forum. I have noticed that when you post something, you expect it to remain sacrosanct and not challenged. And you always speak in absolutes, rarely giving in on any point, no matter what it is. So Jack Bruce died, and that is unfortunate. The man died of liver disease mostly brought on by alcohol and drug excesses. If you want to be an dead man's ass kisser, that's one thing. I qualified my remarks to be in line with your statement "of his generation", which was FORTY YEARS AGO. I didn't trash the man. Maybe you need to learn to read more carefully.

From the perspective on this side of the pond, one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Only together for 2 years and 38 million album sales. 3 superb musicians who were prepared to give each other the room to achieve true greatness. Enough said.
PS. At the reunion less than 10 years ago they were still superb so Jack's time wasn't 40 years ago.

Hey Att: First off, fuck off,
My problem is the pointless and inappropriate bit of opinion mongering you engaged in . Sorry, I do not speaking in absoluets always, speaking of absolutes."Of his generation" need be qualification enough as to the scope of his talent. If I had said he was the best player ,period, then that would be an invitation, but I take it that you've the personality to be contrary even though the tone of a discussion nor what was actually said is intended to stir up controversy .You were looking for an argument, in my view, and shame on you for doing so. You come off like a smug little worm who can't wait to find another apple to eat is way through. So fuck you, jack, and let this be the last of our exchanges. ---------- ---- ted-burke.com tburke4@san.rr.com

There is a huge difference between a thread arguing for "who is the best or most influential whatever" and a thread paying respect to an important musician and influence who just passed away! The difference should be obvious, and for those for whom it is obvious, treating the latter like the former feels (to me at least) like someone standing up in a memorial service and arguing about the eulogy. Is it too much to ask that people who feel the need to express respect and gratitude for the life of a great creative musician also be treated with basic respect? And then to slam the deceased as having brought their death on by their own lifestyle? Really? Unbelievable! Usually I just ignore the bickering and BS on this site because the benefits are so great, but this? Are you kidding me?

I'm going to agree with Ted that there is a big difference between a thread arguing over who was best and a thread eulogizing someone. In internet parlance that's called thread-jacking.
That said, the best way to handle a thread-jacking is generally to try to nudge things back on track.
Nudge.
Please take out your harmonicas. Breathe in. Breathe out. Rinse. Repeat. Relax.
If anyone, in retrospect, decides their comments might not be appropriate for a eulogy thread, for whatever reason, feel free to edit or remove them. If anyone has any comments they feel might be in violation of the forum creed on in this thread, please remove them. It would be a shame to have to lock a thread eulogizing a great musician.

Nacoran is a gentleman, and was much too nice.
I'm a gentleman, but even I know when things have gone too far.
I don't care who started this. I don't care who just died. What I see is that both Ted Burke and atty1chgo have blatantly violated the forum creed.
You guys have been here long enough and should know better. Please go somewhere and cool down. Your passwords have been changed--by me.
You're both suspended for one week, effective immediately. If you'd like to be reinstated, please email nacoran any time after 9:45 PM CST next Sunday and he'll do that. Please don't contact me regarding this matter. (If you do, I won't reply.) Go somewhere and figure out how once again to be law-abiding citizens of this forum.
