It isn't a simple 12 bar blues...there is the call and response intro, stops on the turnaround to account for, the B section, riffage...
Could you jam to this progression at a jam? Yes. Would you be able to do everything they did without explanation? No.
A simple 12 bar song would be the same progression played the same way with the same timing the whole song. You can actually see where MD has to think about playing a fill during one of the changes. I, personally, think most of us would struggle to play this on a first take. ---------- Mike My Website My Harmonica Effects Blog

To everybody who thinks Magic Dick's playing on this is so pedestrian, I say if you got a better version of this, go ahead post it!!!!!!
Put up or shut up.

And no, I'm not gonna because I know I couldn't come close. The rules are it's gotta be you and someone on guitar, no other instruments. Pick any arrangement YOU think is better.
Go ahead, make our day.

are instruction at a jam forbidden?
you hear things like... from the 5 quick change to the 4 watch for the breaks, i'll raise my hand
pro players do that all the time
perhaps i am over simplfying but i tend to do that, keep it simple stupid is a phrase that comes to mind.... kiss. reduce to the lowest common denominator
i never said i did not like this. my comments were,it is a simple blues tune. which it is.
i have posted enough of my playing while i am no magic dick, i can hold my own.
perhaps you are over complicating things?

"perhaps you are over complicating things?"
Maybe, but I doubt anyone here would be able to call it out at a blues jam and successfully play it with this same structure in a timely manner.
I can appreciate the want to keep things simple, but I still don't think of the song as a simple 12 bar blues jam. I am confused as to the comments about your playing in the relevance of that in the conversation.
I wouldn't equate this to being a blues song...it is a 12 bar, but it is R&B or funk, IMHO.

the reference to my playing was in re: to the other poster, replying put up or shut up, not to anything you said, sorry for the confusion.
this is a funky blues jam, but blues none the less, there is an 8 bar bridge after the harp solo
the singer will often hold up 5 fingers indicting the 5chord or 4 fingers on the 4 chord so everyone can follow
this is very common blues device

Lots of songs are I IV V and even 12 bars...that doesn't mean they are blues songs (or easy to play, or work with blues harp riffs). If that was true, the Beatles would be the world's biggest blues band...

Historically, PGABNB was a R&B hit and is regarded as one of the songs that made funk a genre...I don't think the average person would consider it blues either. Here are a few 12 bar blues songs...

funk music has a strong beat on the one. but not at the expense of the back beat on the two and the four.
i bet magic is reading this
saying to himself, while laughing out loud yep, we were just jamming some blues.

Shun Ng is something really great I never seen before. In general I like Magic Dick's playing (although it seems to me he can make a better take), but I dislike harmonica tone. Too much low mid frequencies for clean tone for my taste. I'd prefer more clearer tone or some distortion. But I like pan effect. ---------- Excuse my bad English.

I will default to your superior intelligence, talent, and musical ability, but I still don't understand how Papa's Got A Brand New Bag is a simple blues song. ---------- Mike My Website My Harmonica Effects Blog

i remember the mighty flyers released an album
file under rock
most people would consider them a blues band, i would.
the record company thought they would sell more records by calling it that. not sure rod liked the idea, but hey if it sells more records

MD is the ONLY harp player I ever really listened to as I learned to play. I never tried to copy his licks or anyone else's, but I love the J Giles Band to this day. I'm really glad to see Dick in good form and good health. I think the vid is awesome. It is funky, fresh, and really cool. The timing is impeccable and the licks are clean on both counts. About the Blues label. I have been fighting this for years. Too many people think harp is only for blues, including many musicians. I often tell a band when setting in, "Don't give me any slow freekin blues, just play the next song on the set list". I'm a pretty laid back guy but this Blues Only, thing gets me steamed!!!...Goose

Millson, I like your compression metaphor, but sometimes a little compression is a good thing for thickening the sound.
