Reed material. Does it really matter? Hohner remains a proponent of traditional brass. Suzuki touts the benefits of phosphor bronze. And Seydel is famous for its stainless steel. I have all three. I do not believe these different reed materials sound different to the listener. I do believe they "play" differently. I also believe that my brass reeds go out of tune more frequently than my steel reeds. I rarely break any reeds, so thats not an issue, but the way the materials stress and wear seem different. And yes, they are different to work on - tuning and gapping.

What are your views on reed materials? Do you have a preference, and if so, why?

Does anyone know of other reed materials, besides brass, bronze, and steel?

I've got some old Magnus harmonicas- 100% plastic, including the reeds! (They don't play well, but that may be their age rather than their material).

i love seydels stainless reeds. After a couple of years I have yet to have one go flat on me. They are perhaps not as bright as suzuki phosphor bronze

I love my Seydel stainless steel reed harps. They last a very, very long time.
