I recommend hitting the junk shops and finding a case, then outfitting it how ever you like. There are some cool finds out there and you wind up with a unique case of your own! ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

"Warning" is a good title for this thread. The thread entitled "A word of warning" was locked for a reason and forum members are advised--I'm speaking here as the irritable webmaster--not to use this thread, or any other thread, to revisit the issues litigated there. Thanks.

To the new topic, I went to a big flea market last weekend, and there were a lot of very small, older style luggage pieces that were perfect for harp and gear cases, that is if you are looking for cases that size.
I like my camera case: square, deep, zip pockets inside and out, with shoulder strap, perfect for lots of gear - harps, cables, mics. I use single and double chamber long fabric pencil cases for my stick mics, with thick grey polyurethane foam inside for protection, and different colors so I know which mic is within. It doesn't have to be fancy.

My harp case is an old, wood silverware case. Looks cool and holds 24 or so harps (one chromatic), two mics, a cable and some assorted tools etc. Not too big - approx. 14 x 10."

I'm with atty1chgo on this. I use a black nylon Brookstone pouch which was designed to hold shaving gear to hold my harps when playing out. Holds about a dozen harps (SP 20's which i keep in their plastic cases). Cost - zero as I woud have just thrown it away anyway.
-------
Probably a hang over habit from my competitve sports days when often the guys with the best gear were the worst players. I'd rather have the modest carrying equipment and then wail the hell of the harp when I get up there.

A friend gave me an old clarinet case. Its about 16x9. It holds 3 steve baker specials, 5 regular harps, a Shure commando, swiss army knife, and an I frame 32 smith revolver.

Hey, I had a clarinet case, too.
Then someone told me to go to Lowe's where for $20, they had a small metal case with that foam insert that you could cut out or shape to fit whatever you put into it.
Have actually seen some custom case builders use this exact one for their concepts.
Finally had a leather case custom built by "Skankin' Frank Skanga, great harmonica player and musician from Canada. ---------- The Iceman

I had to replace my stalwart vehicle recently, which, with doing due diligence, has cut into both my time and energy, but at some point I will finish my new harp case.
Here is link to a collectors site that shows what I'm converting:

nacoran,
That's hilarious. If you're not just yanking the collective chain, be sure to show us the finished product.

I found an old pool cue case in good condition in the council cleanup. Holds about 12 harps and looks badass.

Bilzharp, absolutely serious! I just need to cut the inserts and maybe upgrade the latches a bit. The hard time was finding it in the back of my storage shed. I've got stuff in there from the deepest recesses of my childhood. :) Most of the slots hold harps really well.

Bronze, that does sound badass!
Unfortunately, my brain always takes things to their illogical conclusion and now I want a harmonica built into a pool cue!

@Nate "Illogical conclusion." I like it. Harp in a pool cue. Warbling could get mighty dangerous... BronzeWailer's YouTube

Yeah, but if you can warble and put the eight ball in the corner pocket at the same time you would be a legend!

I want to add a second tray to this, the case is just deep enough for another layer of harps, but I am using it as is.
Frank, the mathematics of billiards is relatively straightforward. It's delivering the cue stick to the ball in the calculated manner that presents the challenge!
My son has a walking stick that can reassemble into a cue stick. I have also seen walking sticks that contain a flask. If you add in Nate's harmonica feature you could shoot pool, get drunk, make music and stagger home all with only one item to carry!

the problem i have had with cases as shown by stme58 is that eventually the rust builds up where the top of the cover plate hits the reed plate, as the moisture after playing runs down there.. also the vertical harp cases allow you to put far more harps into a smaller foot print. the foam is not great with moisture either over time, it gets moldy. i do like the hetrick approach of vertical dividers made of acrylic, except the harps rattle a little.

Most of my covers are Stainless so I have not seen the rust problem walterharp mentions. The concern seems valid though. I wonder if lining the bottom of the harp slot with a very absorbent material would help. I have access to the stuff diapers are made out of. Before is is fluffed up for use in diaper is is kind of like thick rough card-stock. It is used in printers in this form to absorb stray ink.

Lay them with the holes up. Or store the case on its edge.

Or don't use the foam insert idea. Allow for some airflow in the case. Leave the lid open sometimes.
