It's fun once in a while. Not when it is half of the forum's content.

Same for top 3, top 5, top 10, etc

OK, flame suit on.

Yes please! The only thing that is #1 indisputable is that those threads are annoying and ultimately useless because, you know what they say opinions are like....

I agree 100%. I think there is a more "indisputable" way to mathematically express your sentiments.

I completely agree Greg. I see all these types of lists as pointless, argument causing items and mostly a total, utter waste of time. They are generally such a waste of time that they make me seriously consider leaving this forum altogether.

This issue has negatively effected the frequency of my visits. The subject posts for opinions on the most, best and "why" are too often intended to provoke contentious threads. It's not interesting and has degraded the site to the point that I spend a lot more time elsewhere.
Please stop.

yeah, it's a little too much. #1 hair style?! funny but there is no end to # 1 type posts.

Objections duly noted. Interestingly enough, the Top-10 and #1 threads have been very well behaved and positive, rather than, for example, employing words like "stop," "contentious," and "pointless."

I'm surprised it's taken so long for this particular handful of lists to materialize, but I'm glad they've materialized and provoked interest (among some but clearly not all) and discussion. They're entirely within the spirit and purpose of this forum, and in that respect they're completely unobjectionable. But I'm glad that those who don't enjoy them have spoken up, too. I think they're a passing fancy and will eventually give way to a series of threads on antique tube-lore, TB vs. TP, and all the other things we love to argue about.

I agree about the silliness of the #1 hair thread. Please guys. Let's get back to certifiably important questions, such as the creaminess of the sound produced by NOS black RCA preamp tubes. (Actually, that's a good question: Did Little Walter care more about the way his hair was styled or the brand of tubes in his amp?)

Kudos to Kuds for using "creaminess" in a sentence.

It's unfortunate that by now you guys haven't honed in on my seething SARCASM about the blues HAIR style thread.
You guys are a great(albeit a very awkward) bunch of fellas

I agree with kudzurunner. And the same could be said of the sometimes incessant drumbeat of posts about XYZ tube being the best, or gushing about (Johnny Walker) Black Label elements. Just sayin'. :0

By the way, what brand of pomade did LW use?

It is almost like threads are being started just for the sake of starting a thread.
Thankfully, I have learned the art of not reading threads that don't interest me.
So this trend is giving me more time to be productive. (Or watch past episodes of Hell On Wheels)

Starting threads seems to be a social addiction to see who can be most popular.

btw, Little Walter was a Dapper Dan man.

Right on, Iceman. And ironically, when the preponderance of those threads are about loony tunes - juvenile topics, it tends to have the opposite effect.

Although I am guilty of this as well, those "clever" little retorts and "smiley faces" are getting tiresome, too.

I am not into rating/scaling musicians and I thank Greg for raising this issue. There have been so many going on that I have had less interest in the forum.

On any given day if I compiled such lists one player might move up or down, on or off such a list based on my mood of the day and what music speaks to me that day. The lists are so dependent on personal taste in music, and open the door to pointless disagreements.

There is one benefit from such threads, as much as I don't like them, and that is the many videos of good players and songs that are posted. I have really enjoyed revisiting great players/songs that I may have only on cassettes, and I have heard music that is new to me. The videos are one of the great benefits of a group that allows embedded videos.

So perhaps an occasional alternative approach to top 10 lists would be threads requesting that members post favorite songs/videos based on a style of blues harmonica (country blues, rock, Chicago blues, jump, etc.), or from an era (pre-war, modern, '50s, '60s, etc.) or using a technique (TB, pursed, OB, no OB, valved harp, etc.), or chromatic position blues (3rd, 1st, 4th, 2nd, etc). When we post, maybe note why we like it, or what we find interesting about the cut.

We would get to hear new musicians or songs that are enjoyed by forum members without the rating game.

It's true, but not necessarily in that order...unless of course you think they're correct - though don't sweat the small stuff, it really is all the same donut, lighten up, cut some calories, honk your horn if you love Little Walter :)

I believe there is merit in discussing how/why players are good at various things, looking at videos etc., but this community will never agree on such matters. We may as well ask who is the 38th best.

Please don't say Jerry Portnoy - he is way better then 38th :)
