As most of are well aware, I am an analog guy. I can work a hammer with unparalleled aplomb, but my understanding of anything involving tech is a lost cause.

With that preface out of the way, is there a simple way for those of us that have an irrational fear of allowing our various email addresses and other contact info to get out there to use some kind of a clearing house to allow contact?

For example, let's say I want to communicate directly with another Forum member (they live nearby, I find that I share a hobby outside music, etc). Is there a way that I can get my contact info to them without posting it in this open forum?

I certainly am not asking to burden some Admin that holds the data archive to act as a clearing house. And I'm also not talking about potential robot spamming and trying to be cute and use the "dot com" in lieu of .com. I'm simply asking if info can be somehow brokered over to another person.

Maybe this is a simple thing that I'm just ignorant of?

Write to someone like me who doesn't care and just has a contact in my handle. Tell x to contact me. I'll pass it on for you crazy pair and we'll see what happens. Matchmaker matchmaker make me a match...
I dunno.

Buzadero, click on their forum name and see if they have put their email address into their profile. Add your email address to your profile and people will be able to make contact with you. If you want.

Thanks to both replies. AbejaSuprema, thanks for the offer to middleman, I may take you up on it.

I have, on a couple occasions, passed messages along from one member to another. Since we won't give out anyone's emails it means we have to send the message as the go between, but it happens rarely enough that we (or at least I, don't want to speak for the other admins) don't mind.

Technologically, the solution is probably what I do with the membership email address, although for slightly different reasons:

What we do there is we have the membership email address, and in the account there is an option to automatically forward any email that comes into there to my regular email. Any one of the admins can read the email in the membership folder, but since it's forwarding to my regular email I don't have to go out of my way to check the other folder every day. You could use the same trick as a slight variation of the burner email trick people do when registering for sites- just create an email account on any one of the billions of free email account sites and set it up to forward to your regular email account. You can share that email openly. Any mail sent there will get forwarded to you but you won't have shared your 'real' email address. If it starts getting too much spam you can just erase the account and set up another one with a different name- just make sure anyone you are corresponding with through that address gets the new email (or, after you trust them you can just email your 'real' email address to them.)

Until recently Hotmail let you maintain multiple account as subaccounts (which let you do this all with one sign in). Sadly, too many spammers were using them so you can't do that anymore; but the trick still works. Does anyone know any servers out there that let you manage multiple emails under one sign in?

I've managed to keep my email for many years now without getting too much spam. I've used the same account since before Hotmail was bought by Microsoft. In general, the most important way to protect your email is to yell at your friends and make sure they use blind copy instead of carbon copy when they are forwarding emails. When they send a mailing to a bunch of people all at once carbon copy they've just shared your email with the world. :(

Hi Buzadero, I'm privacy conscious too. Nevertheless, my email address is in my user profile for anyone who wants to see it. It's somewhat disguised, so humans can figure it out but spambots can't. Sort of like the code we have to decipher to post a message in this forum. Log in, click my user name, and have a look at how I do it.

Cheers,

wolf kristiansen

Edit--
Oops, I reread your message and now see you don't want to do what I've done. Works for me, though.

w.k.

Wow--I didn't know you could be a "Luddite" unless you lived in the UK! In California I think it's usually referred to as a "Republican," but where I grew up in Utah, we simply called them "dumfux." I guess it just depends on where you're from. . .

Thanks, dude.
As you well know, I'm in California. The label "dumfux" is considered both Hate Speech or 'profiling' depending on the context and is frowned upon. In my case, I can assure you it is well warranted.

Unless you just attacked me in this public Forum. In which case, I gotta have Nate bust yo' ass.
