Tuning a Richter tuned harp to Natural Minor

I know it's just one step down. Which method is preferred solder or tuning down?

Also, what intonation is preferred? I usually like compromised tuning on a Richter tuned harp.

Two other possibilities-

Blue tack works well and can work as a pretty reasonable permanent- until you want to change it- solution.

I think also some guys find it easier to swap reeds on some conversions, if they've got a spare available.

All methods mentioned above will get'r done. 5-limit just intonation works real nice, pat Missin has info about it on his site if you want to research it.

Joe, is this the tuning you would use for 5-limit?

Gnarly that's not 5-limit, there's a section on pat's site specifically talking about it and minor tunings. The notes you have flattened are sharp instead. Don't remember if he shows a chart or *just* discusses it. Ba dum bump.

Harpwrench is correct... All the temperament charts for MINOR tunings show the 3rds as tuned sharp. It is very confusing and about the time I get it memorized, I forget it. I knocked out a bunch of MINORS at SPAH and asked 10 people and all said the 3rds were to be tuned flat just like on standard tuning. Fortunately, this topic came up elsewhere during that time and I was able to correct the error.

Harpwrench is correct and Pat Misson's site as well as Eugene's site both call for tuning 3rds sharp.

Personally, I find the quickest and most efficient method is to just re-tune the reed. Going down is super easy and in this case, you are working on a 3rd in standard major tuning that is most likely tuned flat and are going to a 3rd in minor tuning so the end result is only about 3/4 of a step re-tune.

I will also say that getting the secret to a great sounding MINOR is getting the temperament correct. Mess it up - as I have done a bunch - and even the untrained ear can notice that something isn't right.

On minors, when tuning to just minor, the thirds are usually going to be tuned 16 cents sharp.

I'm using the new MasterHarp tuner and with the 4 or 5 harmonicas I've tuned they sound great.

I ended up going with solder for the first Nat Minor harp I tuned. I also used 5 limit JI for the tuning. All harps are Golden Melodies.

For the next two I think I'll try just shaving off some material off the base since it's only one half step down. While the solder worked, I feel like it would be easy to make a mistake.
