I've got an oportunity to buy 2 8" C8R's out of the 60's which have been re-coned which I was considering building a cab for. I would be powering them with my VHT 12/20RT head.
Any thoughts on that?
Actually, I have access to 4 of them.

My Meteor Mini has two of them. Sounds pretty awesome but there's also a C10Q of similar vintage so it gets a deeper bark.

2x8's are better than 1x8 but not by much. I would go with 1 or 2x10, especially if you are giging with a full band...BN

I have an Airline with 2X8" Rolas, puts it out there. Much bigger sound than my Champ clones.

2x8 could be a killer. It depends on what amp you put them in. I have a 22W amp based on a 65 deluxe circuit ant i can get about 99db FAT tone out of it.
I never heard that VHT and can not tell you anything about it.

If you have access to four speakers then I'd go with a 4X8 cab. Then get over to the Lone Wolf harp forum and the Weber Forum and ask about any mods to the VHT amp circuit to make it more harp friendly if needed.

I believe I'm the only harp player left on the Weber Forum. Arney watches it occasionally. Can't help on mods for that amp...BN

The 12/20 is already pretty harp friendly OOTB. Basically, VHT took a Princeton and a Deluxe and married them into one amp. In terms of mods, if anyone could come up with a few ideas, I'd be willing to bet Skip Simmons would be the chap to talk to.

That's interesting Tim. I haven't looked at the 12/20 but I gather the name refers to switchable power rating between 12 (Princeton) and 20 (deluxe) watts?
Do you know if the circuits are actually fenderish?

Yeah...the 12/20 denotes its high and low output wattages.

I like how you said FenderISH. Pretty much all the circuitry in the VHT Special series are inspired and adapted from BF Fender circuits. The 12/20 is somewhat odd though. Because some of the texture and power controls also give it a hint of a Boogie Mk I. And dont forget...it also accepts a variety of different power tubes. So you could even slap EL34's in there and get Marshall crunch out of it. A damned versatile little amp.

And don't forget that beautiful reverb and tremelo.
I've changed my mind on the two eights and I'm going to fit Lil Buddy's into my 12" cabs and take out the Cannabis Rex 12".

@ Leatherlips: Could you give us your opinion of the 12" Cannabis Rex that you're planning to remove? Thanks!

Mike, are you no longer intending to use the four 8"s at all?
I'm interested. Depending on the $ of course. Not too far to ship though.

SmokeJS, I'm afraid I didn't use them long enough to give much of an opinion, but I do like fairly early breakup and I wasn't getting that with my setup and I was running the full 20w with the head. Having said that, I liked what I heard with the mellow highs, great midrange but the lows might have been better if driven harder with a higher watt amp.
SuperBee, I don't own the 4 8" C8r's, they are being sold from a warehouse in Melbourne called Music Swap Shop Online. Let me know how you go.

Thank you. I sent them an email (I think). That's what I paid for my 8A100s, plus half as much again for freight, so I'm thinking it's probably fair. Thanks for the heads up on the store, it could be quite useful for me

I rather call it a VHT special6 combined with a princeton plus....
It have the small 5 watter VHT fixed tonestack followed by a lot of modern thinking about preamp and ended with a fixed bias cathodyne PI.
If it was mine i should begin with 2x10 speaker combination. Maybe a 8 + 10 combination. 2x8 could be nice but 4x8 will be too boomy and stiff.

Postage to Tassie from Melbourne is $45. This is surprisingly similar to importing across the pacific...
Seems they've been pulled from a sonny jr

Yeah, a bit too pricey for me to buy on a curious whim I think...
