This is a simple poll. No need to elaborate why, or to get into make and model of mic.

Question 1 -

Clean or dirty sound?

Question 2 -

Stick Mic or Bullet/shell mic?

Primary preference please.

If clean is 1 and dirty is 10, I'd put my amp sound at around 7-8.

I'm always looking for the right shaped mic for me, but so far exclusively bullet.

Hi atty1chgo-- I understand you want clear answers. I appreciate you want a count, not long dissertations on sounds and microphones.

Like others, I have clean and dirty mics-- mostly clean. Like others, I have stick and bullet mics-- mostly stick. So, for your count you may put me down for clean and stick.

It's not quite reality, though. I play clean and dirty, stick and bullet, depending on the gig, my amp, my audience, my mood. I like both-- clean and dirty, stick and bullet. Life is complicated.

Cheers,

BOTH. I DO BOTH. A 3 or 4 hour gig with only one sound? Boring. I play acoustic through a stick mic (Ultimate 58) into the PA. I play dirty through a tube amp with one of my wood bullets. I LOVE both kinds of sounds. If I could choose only one - probably amplified/bullet.

If choose one:
Dirty - stick.

Although I like whole range of tones I can get from harmonica from absolutely clean acoustic to dirtiest.

Pretty clean, Shure 585 high z, but tweakable via Lone wolf harp delay into either Silvertone 1482 or for more distortion a Vibro Champ.

Clean, compared to some. Dirty comp to others. Usually in the same song.
Bullets, mostly. What's a 605? It's not a stick, so I guess it's a bullet.

@ Superbee - I would say that Electrovoice mics such as EV 605, 606, 638, 641, 630, 635 etc. would be considered in the bullet/shell category, since they are chrome finish shells.

Depends on what form you are playing.
Country, Bluegrass,Jazz, Clean playing off a Stick.
Blues, Blues Rock, Dirty, Bullet or a Dirty Stick.

I play super clean thru pretty dirty, but don't stay on one end of the spectrum or the other.

I use a variety of mics. Some are sticks, and others are "nonstandard" shapes (e.g., lavaliere, tape recorder mics, biscuits, small diaphragm condensers, chopped sticks, etc.) but never use a "traditional" bullet-type.

primarily now

tube amp with a little break up (slightly dirty) with a bullet (cleaner to dirty depending on cup and playing volume)

if you asked me 6 months ago I was leaning toward a bulletized stick mic through a dirty bassman..

If it's a clean mic, I'll play it dirty - if it's a dirty mic I'll play it clean - I like holding a bullet and used a GB for ages... a year ago or so I bought a GH wooden bullet mic, it is the "perfect" mic :)

Clean/stick. This year, I got a solid state Orange amp with a Celestion Super 8 speaker. It's got what I call "Peach Fuzz" distortion.

atty1chgo - Sorry to sidetrack your poll for a moment, but I thought the following should be mentioned……...I find it quite interesting that people often seem to relate the clean/stick mic option to acoustic playing, whilst a dirty/bullet is related to amplified. The reason I prefer clean/stick over dirty/bullet is precisely because I can then choose to dirty it up through playing and cupping technique. With a clean/stick I have numerous options available to me ranging from clean acoustic, right through to dirty and overdriven. It's far better and much more sensible in my opinion than using a dirty sound to begin with. Like Greg rightly says, using one sound all night can get boring. I don't like carrying loads of gear so use clean/stick as my starting point. Then dirty it up if needed for a particular song.

Both - depends on the song.

However, I am now increasingly playing clean. And increasingly with the mic on a stand, working on improving my use of hand effects, mouth effects, throat effects, and the tone I can get naturally with the harp. Inspired by watching those 1960s videos of Sonny Boy.

@Kingley re " With a clean/stick I have numerous options available to me ranging from clean acoustic, right through to dirty and overdriven."

A big factor in this is what the mic is plugged into. In your case - are you using an amp (or pedal) - or straight into the PA?

50/50 on each.

Right now I alternate between a JT-30 with a CR element and a vintage 545 ultimate mic from Greg without the bulletizer. The shure 57 and 58 are superb harp mics as is the electrovoice RE-10.

Greg - Sometimes I'll use an amp, but mostly these days it's either a Lone Wolf Harp Attack or a mic direct into the PA.

The other evening we got a gig at a pizza joint and took our amps. The guy had a small p.a. but whate none of us had was a power strip, and that meant only one amp could be plugged in. I put Jolene's guitar amp in and played harp through the p.a., stick mic on a separate channel. It was a very low volume gig and the p.a. speakers were on the floor right behind my chair. Very tough to hear esp when the other guitar was a bit loud and way busy.
It made for a difficult evening tone wise but we've been asked back in a few weeks and we're going. Next time both amps will be plugged in and I may bring the Heumann modded dynamic mic along for its excellent tone. It's a kind of bullet but actually more of a cylinder. EV m43u.
I think also I will see if we can set the p.a. speakers up off the floor.
In this instance I am going to go for dirty tone. M43u through a champ.
