Here's some pretty cool video of Muddy Waters with an interview by one of the most knowledgeable music writers in blues, Pete Welding. The line up Muddy has here is:

Pee Wee Madison and Sammy Lawhorn -- guitars
Pinetop Perkins -- piano
Paul Oscher -- harmonica and melodica
Calvin "Fuzz" Jones -- bass
Willie "Big Eyes" Smith -- drums

Oscher does an awesome job here. Serious groove, tone and overall command. George Smith taking the stand was very cool.

Saw Muddy Waters around this time period but I wasn't a harp player, and it's been 40 years, so not sure if I saw/heard Paul Oscher or George Smith. Muddy was completely hypnotizing. On this video Paul Oscher's playing seems appropriately slightly restrained to me. If there's one thing I'm grateful for it's that the melodica didn't become a part of the modern blues band. It can sound good but diatonic and chromatic are more than enough for me to get my head around!

Great post Bob, very evocative. One of the things I liked most was seeing Muddy drinking champagne just like the song. That's style.

Speaking of tone...When Muddy says "...feeling IS the tone.". That really caught my ear. In our quest for good tone, we need to keep in mind that the physical sound of what we do is only a part of the equation. Gotta play from the heart. Kudzu mentions this in one of his vids. You have to hold on to the grievance just enough, and then let it go as you're playing.

Cool vid.
