I've invented new harmonica tuning that allows you to play chromatically very easy (using only bends) and it is very "richterish". I've checked overblow.com, Jim's anthology and have not found any similar tuning.
This is a short demo of it.

I think it's a mix of Richter bottom end and modified Diminished further up. It's pure Richter holes 1-4, pure Diminished from holes 6-10, with a transitional hole 5 to bring the notes into line for chords & improv in 2nd Position.

Konstantin seems to be using a harp that starts on Low F, so I postulate the scale is (blow notes on top):

F A C F Ab Bb Db E G Bb
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
G C E G Bb C Eb F# A C

Translate that into a harp that starts on C, and it looks like this:

C E G C Eb F Ab B D F
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
D G B D F G Bb C# E G

If it's this scale, it's not strictly fully chromatic without overblows, as you'd still need one on hole 1 to get the semitone between 1 draw and 2 blow.

If 2 blow is lowered a semitone it would be fully chromatic without overblows, but then the low blow chord will be minor, not major - which I didn't hear on the clip.

Am I right, Konstantin? It's a nice mix :-)

It's impossible to hide any secrets from Brandon! :) ;) Yes, you are right about tuning! That's why I'm still not decided about bottom of the tuning, I'm not posted full information about it. One of my prototypes uses paddy Richter idea on the 3 hole for example. Main disadvantage that I've found in my tuning is that octave 3-6 is missed. But! I can easily play Juke in 6 position for example! :)

For everybody, if you will start to use this tuning then please call it "easy chromatic" it will be a pleasure for me :) ;)

Konstantin, looks like I invented another new tuning :-)

I thought I heard a Db octave split in your clip and it seemed to me that in the chromatic run you bent every note by 2 semitones - seems like I cant' really trust my ears. Anyways, that's what I came up with:

F A C F A Bb C# E G Bb
G C E G Bb C# E G Bb C#

Funny enough, after thinking about it for a while I had the idea to create a hybrid between harmonic minor and diminished from hole 6 upwards

F Ab C F Ab B D F Ab B
G C E G Bb C# E G Bb C#

This way you have a 3-7 octave ...

I'm impressed by Brendan's ability to decipher a tuning by listening to a recording!
Fourkey is great, but it doesn't have the bends--this tuning has a bend on every hole.
I also like that there is no shift in the breath pattern.
I will try to build one of these when time allows.

Hannes, hmmm I like your idea a lot! Once I've started to thinking about to develop a new tuning I've looked into harmonic minor too, but my ideas did not go too far. Cool!

So here's what I got . . .

That's a C harp--no need to retune the bottom four holes.
Blow 5 gets lowered a half step, and blow and draw 6-10 require a retune (or replacement).

You could try to use a key other than C to start, but I think replacing the blow reeds 8, 9, and 10 would be a better bet.

OK, now this--
Made one out of a ProMaster,not quite in tune, but playable.
I will give it some time, and bring it to SPAH!
PS It will in tune by SPAH 8^)
PPS Didn't replace any reeds.
PPPS I would probably call it "Richter dimi"

Why repeat the F (on a C harp) ? You already have a diminished chord on 3-5 draw of a standard tuned harp, you could just carry on with Ab B D F Ab on 6-10 draw which gives you more octave splits. And hole 5-10 blow would become Eb F# A C Eb F# which is more in line with diminished tuning (Eb-F is "out of line"), gives you more octave splits as well and a little less to retune.

I love these alternate tuning discussions and I like the innovation!

If you buy a Seydel through me in any of the above alternate tunings and decide after playing it that you don't like it, I will refund your money or swap it out for a standard Richter tuned.

Gnarly.. (Gary..) I do make this offer on 12 hole models.
Even if we lose a few dollars here and there, it always works out when business supports innovation. New and creative sounds spark interest in the instrument and that's a good thing.

.. and yes.. looking forward to SPAH 51 and catching up.

@ Hannes: I think Konstantin was making his tuning more user-friendly for improvising in 2nd position (G on a C harp).

Starting the Diminished scale on the F in hole 6 gives you the G as a draw, available for soulful wailing and bending down to the F# major seventh. Otherwise it would be a draw bend, not so flexible.

Hello everybody! Accidentally I've read the topic again and have found that layout that was here is incorrect! Sorry to all! The correct "easy chromatic" does not have double notes like Bb on 5 and 6 holes here.
Correct layout can be found in this short video (0.40).
