I know Gary closed his Sonny Jr. business sometime back for health reasons. Anyone know how he is doing?

He's doing OK. He is still doing some amp work - just on a piecemeal basis.

Gary was the first guy I ever saw live playing the harp into the glass. It was very cool.

I'm glad to hear he's doing OK. tmf's video confirms my memory from having seen him once: he's one of the few players around who really nails the Sonny Terry sound. I can play a few licks & grooves in that general style, but he's a master of it.

I read that he drove Sonny Terry around and was taught by him personally. Very cool.
Love his amps too. I have a Super Cruncher that simply just works for me.

I've played on two SJ amps. An SJ1, and a Super Cruncher. I have to say, the Super Cruncher is the only amp I've played to date that has literally scared me. LOL

Gary sent me a cd over ten years ago where he opened for James Cotton 15-20 years ago. It's when Gary was at his peak, and nothing on Youtube compares to his masterful playing and tone on this cd.

When he sent me the cd, he told me not to share it with anyone due to the fact that the guitar player on the cd had signed a contract with a record company.

I would like to download the four songs to Soundcloud and share but don't want to cause any problems with Gary.

Anyone else own or have listened to this CD?

May have been Garys "Elm City Blues Project" band with Rocky Lawerence.

Here is a link to the article:

Also could have been his Code Blue Band-

Harpaholic,
Maybe that's the same one he sent me...
I seem t remember it being a good board or maybe stage mic recording.. somewhere he talks to the crowd about the upcoming act and says they don't know what they're about to see or something to that effect...? I wonder what I did with that CD... probably here somwhere...

He does talk to the crowd talks about ST and gets them involved in one song (clapping to the hook) but what stands out the most is he says hello to "Mr Cotton" "how are you sir" and talks a little bit about what's in store as you mention. One of the songs he switches to Somewhere over the rainbow acoustically. He does a slow blues song, a Sonny Terry song and two others.

Rocky Lawrence does sound familiar. I will have to listen to the CD again.

"I would like to download the four songs to Soundcloud and share but don't want to cause any problems with Gary."

The obvious answer is to not post anything from Gary or any other artist without their permission.
