MAYALL AT 80
As 2013 came to a close and with his 80th birthday mere weeks away, the godfather of British blues quietly entered a North Hollywood Studio with his band, special guest CJ Chenier and co-producer/engineer Eric Corne. He walked out with one of the finest and most personal records of his career, A Special Life, due on May 13 on Forty Below Records. There are three new songs penned by Mayall and one from band members Greg Rzab and Rocky Athas, as well as blues favorites from some of the greats, including Albert King and Jimmy Rogers. CJ Chenier came to join the party on a couple of tracks (including one written by his father).

MAYALL - Prick at any age?
He pissed off a crowd at the San Diego Sports Arena around 1970. Everyone was shouting "Room To Move" and when he finally responded we were educated on his new direction; Jazz. He had no room to move. "The Turning Point" album filled the house and he emptied a good part of it with his attitude. I stuck around because the music was good and I had paid good money to see a performance. I did leave with unfulfilled expectations and vowed to never repeat that mistake.

EDIT: Tickets gone

Mayall is doing or has just finished 59 shows in 64 days.
Try that at 80 years old or how about 25?

I will not deny him his well earned props. He was a huge influence on my musicality. I respected him enough to buy a few tickets to his show. Twice! Sometimes I forget my grudges and go with my heart. (Thank You Milwaukee!) My grudge is driving now.

It hasn't been my driving force, but yup. I get burned I remember where the scars came from. When I dip from the font of forgiveness I develop forgetness. What's your name again?

Artists can decide whether to pander to their fans (always playing their greatest hits, a la Steve Miller summer tours) or choose to evolve musically (a la Miles Davis, who constantly pissed off his old fans in favor of blazing new musical paths).

Also, even great artists can have an "off night" (as when I saw Traffic in 1969 and for a long time thought they were a terrible live band).

The flip side of the experience outlined above...Mayall was playing an outdoor festival in 1969. I was expecting blues band and got Mark Almond Mayall Turning Point...however, it was magical and something new to me.
