Aloha Gents! hope all is well with everybody. I have been really happy withthis thing. But it blew out some speakers the other day. I just did a little research and found it is a 4 ohm out and wants to see (2) 8 ohm 12's. I correctly wired the ones that blew out. They were just too low wattage to handle. My question. if anybody has experienced these wonderful harp amps. I want to make it a single twelve. The specs say it is a 60 watt...geeeez! over kill, I know..will a 30 watt speaker do...? Any suggestions? ----------

That'll be a tough thing to do Kevin. Not many 4 ohm 12" speakers made these days. Really the only ones I've seen recently have been bass amp speakers. But that might not sound bad. It'd be really dark, but if that's your thing....
Weber DOES make 4 ohm 12's, but I think they only ones they have that'd handle the wattage of a 1474 would be their High Power series. I haven't read anything from harp players in terms of their harp tone... ----------

yeah, that's true, thanks Hawkeye! I didn't realize the 1484's are so powerful. I was worried the transformer might have died. But speakers are easier to replace...Weber, huh? How about the Cannibus rex? Just spent 20 minutes looking...nothing...looks like I'm stuck. An 8 ohm won't work, huh? ----------

How bout I tube it down to an AY or AU? And keep the low watt speakers? I had low watt (15-20) 10X12, and it sounded pretty good until it blew em out.

It might work for a bit, as long as you didn't crank it to hard. But it won't sound right. And it could wind up damaging your output tranny since the 8 ohms is more resistant to the 4 ohm load. C-Rex only comes in 8, but I think Eminence might do custom builds in other impedances. No idea what they'd charge though.
Tubing down the preamp won't change the output load. It'll just make your input signal less hot. You'll be quieter in relation to stock, but you'd just have to crank the volume (and by cause and effect the output voltage) up to be heard and hear yourself.
Question...do you really have your heart set on a 1X12, or would a 1X15 work for you? ----------

oh yeah, too bad. Tubing down doesn't help. I understand now. Oh well. I'm waitin on a friend to find some more suitable spkrs to put in there. He collects vintage gear and says he has some P12p's and N's. And some P10's, too. cool. The 8 ohm 10X12 combo is o.k. for now. I wired in parallel. Should be good til then. Does the power diminish at all after 60 years? I know that sounds stupid...I can't imagine 6o watts out of this thing. It is powerful, though. He was tellin me about the neodyne series...being lighter. Not sure about those tone wise for harp. He's a guitar player.

The Silvertone 1485/ Twin Twelve has 2 x6l6's and is making about 35 watts of power. You know how Sears is with there specs (; The Weber 12F150 is an excellent harp speaker with a big fat warm loud sound. This is available at 4 ohms. Any good 50W guitar speaker will work, 4 or 8 ohm. The 1484 OT wants to see a 4 ohm load but an 8 ohm speaker will reduce power output somewhat and lose a little high end. You may actually like this better. Those amps have dinky little OT's that are prone to failure although running them at 8 ohms will not effect the likelihood of failure IMO . Mojo Tone has replacements and so does Mercury Magnetics for way more money. How bout a pair of tens? If that amp has original E caps, they need replacing. The amp will sound much better after this is done and be more reliable. These amps ran a pair of Jensen C12Q's that were only rated at about 30 watts for the pair. They also ran Fishers which is what mine has. They tend to be alittle bright but with the right mic, look out baby...BN
PS: You can also parallel the inputs on chnl 1 & 2 if you leave the effects off. I never tubed mine down. Cool old amps...

If you buy Weber 12 inch sig or vintage speakers you have to have light dope to avoid cone cry. A Cannabis rex do the job as a single speaker. It is a 50 W speaker. I don“t like it, but many other harp players do. I second on a pair of C12Q's . They have a better dynamic and some "air" in the sound.

Now that it is morning, I believe the 1484 has a multitap OT. The unused wire is an 8 ohm tap. IIRC. There is a way to determine OT impedance ratios. I'll link this when I find it. When I say C12Q, that is vintage US made speaker. Not the Italian made item.

Thanks,Arnenym... not sure what "cone cry" sounds like. I do know I probably won't like it. B.N. - Yeah, multi tap...o.k. I'm trying to keep the cab it is presently housed. It is narrow, and a custom speaker may not allow for the closed back. We'll see. The Rola's are pretty deep, too. So I'm hoping this won't be a problem. Thanks! Thanks for all the help..I appreciate it alot. It's great to have this forum, thanks to Adam, too. ----------
