Anyone try 1 of the wolff amps? The description below is interesting. Has some nice features although lacking tone control. Sells on ebay

•USA made in Portland, Oregon
•5 watt 6V6 Class A-power
•Tetrode/triode power switch

•10" Weber 10F-S signature series speaker

•Instrument level line and speaker outputs

•Simple and intuitive controls that let the tone of your guitar shine through
•Hand fabricated powder coated aluminum chassis

•Hand wired turret board construction using high quality silver/teflon wire
•Top notch, locally made pine plywood cabinets

Up for sale is a Wolff Amps 5 watt, class A single ended 6V6 combo with 10” speaker. Wolff Amps is an up and coming boutique amp company. We have been successful with our 5 watt combos locally in Portland, Oregon. The design is based on a classic Supro combo from the 40's but with a larger speaker and a few added features. The whole idea of this amp is to have something with minimal controls to let the character of your guitar shine through but also sound great at the same time. This amp really opens up when overdriven.

The amp has 1 JJ EL34 power tube and 1 JJ 12ax7 preamp tube. The 12ax7 achieves a range of tones from sparkly clean to crunchy rhythm to searing overdrive. Try any 12a*7 series preamp tube for different amounts of gain. There are two toggle switches on the front panel – bright, and boost. The bright switch works like a standard Fender bright switch, and the boost gives that extra oomph if you need it. The power switch is a two way rotary switch. Turn it to the left and the amp runs in triode mode for about 2.5 watts. Turn it to the right and it runs tetrode mode for the full 5 watts. The aluminum chassis is hand fabricated by us and powder coated locally. The circuit is a combination of hand-wiring; point to point and a high quality turret board using silver/Teflon wire.

The amp has an instrument level line out in the back so you can use it on the front end of another amplifier as a power tube overdrive effects pedal essentially. The line out is derived from the speaker output so you get all the harmonics from slamming that 6V6 with a hot signal. Or if you like it clean, it'll do that too. The internal speaker may be safely disconnected while powered on since there is an internal power resistor that gets switched in when the speaker is unplugged from the chassis. This allows the on-board speaker to be muted when running into another amplifier if desired. The 5 watt Wolff is surprisingly loud for it's size, you won't be disappointed!

Wolff amps come with a 2 year warranty. We do not, however warrant tubes. If it should for any reason stop working due to faulty workmanship or components we will repair the amp free of charge. In addition, if the amp suffers a break down in the first 90 days, we will pay shipping one way (back to you after the repair). Damage caused by misuse or abuse will not be covered by the warranty.

It certainly sounds interesting. But I'm a little skeptical. It says handwired turret board, but the pics I've seen after a quick search show a PCB in there. Hmmm

From the Wolff Amps Facebook page.."Wolff Amps: They do sound amazing. They(earlier models) were hand wired turret boards but the new ones have these which actually cost more to build. Contrary to popular belief, a well designed, QUALITY printed circuit board like this is more controllable and less prone to unwanted noise and hum. Try one out and you'll see! Tube sockets, pots, and jacks are still hand wired."

tmf714,

Did you add "it is a guitar amp" to point out it is not good for harp?

Shrug...it might sound great with just with a tube swap..who knows? You are right about no reviews.

tmf714...call them and have them send you 1 for review :)

A kalamazoo is a guitar amp and does not need any mods.

A Kalamazoo has been around, and most of us know they are harp worthy.
I will contact them and ask if I can do a product review for MBH-

That would be great....If the review is good I am sure they will sell some amps at that price.

I like the half power switch.

They seem a bit confused about which power tube they use. And I wonder if they really mean 'tetrode' operation. Both the 6V6 and EL34 are pentodes, but I suppose they could wire it for tetrode/triode if they want.

"why would it need to be modded ?"

The 12AX7 would need to be swapped just for starters.
Who knows what other changes would need to be made until someone tries it-
I contacted Wolff and they said they do not have a demo to ship me to try out-but they did say they have harp players using their amps. I will find out who is using them soon-

"Both the 6V6 and EL34 are pentodes..."

Current production 6V6's are indeed pentodes. But the majority of NOS ones are true tetrodes. That's what they were designed as originally. EL34's have always been pentodes.

Check out the Vinatge 47 amps. They are great for harp out of the box. expensive? Yep, more than a Mini Memphis or used Kalamazoo, but an awesome, good looking amp based on Supros rather than Fenders. I am always amazed no one mentions them here at MBH.
