Lol, and now Groyster did it too. A disappearing/reappearing post!!!

A good magician never gives away his tricks, but I'm a lousy magician. This server has a spam filter that automatically tries to figure out what is spam. Unfortunately, there are two problems with this spam filter- the first is that it's terrible at it's job. It catches several posts a day that aren't spam and hides them, and because we are pretty good at screening for spammers (it's not hard, they usually apply with terrible fake names, or just product names for their real name) it's only ever, in the year+ it's been running, caught a couple real spam messages, because that's all there have been. Second, it can't be turned off for any individual site run by our hosts- it's good for most of their customers, so we are stuck with it.

So, what happens is these posts get greyed out. Only moderators see them, and a link to them gets put in a folder. When we are surfing the site and we see one we can unmark it, or, once a day, I go to that folder and restore everything and they reappear. When I do, I restore all of them (unless they really are spam), so you may see several posts with basically all the same message that all got marked, which explains why sometimes it will look like someone went post happy.

How can you avoid it? A high ratio of links or talk that sounds like an ad, or short messages all seem to be more likely to trigger the filter, for example, Groyster's short 'david copperfield did it' triggered it and I marked it as not spam and it reappeared.

How dumb is the filter? Well, it will even, on occasion, mark admins messages as spam. I think it's even caught one or two of the boss himself's messages.

Nate,

I've deleted my post "ouch my ears" except the title.
How can we delete (ourselves?) unuseful titles?

I took care of it for you. I'm not sure you can delete a thread without admin privileges.
