You guys that are computer/program experts...

I downloaded a simple MP3 Slowdown program (suggested in a posting here somewhere).

It works pretty well...slows down without changing pitch and also has feature to transpose to another key.

I would like to be able to use this program to create a sound file to be saved as an MP3 file on the computer.

Is there a program that will act as a recorder for the output of my slow down program and achieve the results I'd like?

I don't know what SW you use but I use "Amazing Slowdowner" and it lets you save slowed-down or pitch shifted files to AIFF, MP3 Quicktime and other formats.

Harvey Harp is correct. You can do that with Audacity (and it's free). It's a bit of a pain in the butt to export MP3's with Audacity. Because of some cross-licensing issues you have to download the lame codec (really, it's called lame) and drop it in a folder to get Audacity to export as MP3s. There are instructions on the site.

You can have everything working in Audacity though in 5-10 minutes, and then it's pretty easy to use, and it's got lots of other features that you can play around with if you start recording your stuff (which is a very useful learning tool in of itself).

A problem with Audacity in Windows can be that it may not be possible to record whatever is playing on the computer. i.e. it may work fine recording through the mic socket or a USB soundcard, but not record what is coming out of the speakers from e.g. Slow MP3 or other application.

It depends on your soundcard, so in fact it either works or doesn't on a given PC! I just tried one of mine and it doesn't. If it does work, then you will usually need to change the input device in Audacity preferences.

I know this is no help :) but I use Ubuntu Linux for my audio stuff as there are lots of good free audio tools. For instance 'Play it Slowly' which does indeed export to WAV.

...Ah actually ignore all that.

The best thing is to use Audacity to do the slowing and/or the pitch shifting and then export it directly to mp3. Audacity has separate functions for independent pitch and speed shifting.

audacity is great-- it records 'what u hear'---u can also record audio from u tube etc when someone is teaching something u want to learn--I use slow downer -burn cd and practice at graduating speeds-- another cool thing is BSR screen recorder-when on u tube you can record audio and video and burn a movie to dvd -to study later--with any of these 'find your soundcard info - mixer if u will'---'where you can adjust'whats being recorded, volume, tone etc-

snowman - I agree, audacity is great. But to avoid disappointment, it is not always straightforward to 'record what you hear'. As I mentioned above, it depends on your soundcard and PC.

But for Iceman to do want he wants, there is an alternative as I described.

Yes, there is a learning code to Audacity, but not nearly as long as the learning curve for blowing Harp.
I think the in the newer versions of Audacity, they have fixed the MP3 issue, if I remember correctly. I have no problem with recording anything, but I hava An Echo Mia sound card, which I have loved for years, and it keeps me from buying a new computer. Its free, and they never try to sell you anything, to my knowledge.

The other thing about Audacity that makes it interesting is that it saves all your work in its own format, and when you go back to retrieve it, it is very quick. When you are done, you juse export it as either a Wave, or now, I think an MP3 file.

HarveyHarp - yes indeed, audacity is 'the one'. I've been using it for years since the early versions. Just checked, and the LAME mp3 encoder is still a separate download but it's easy to do. As nacaron says, it's a licencing issue rather than a technical one.

Thanks for the input.

In conclusion, there is no program I can use to capture the sound generated by my current slow down program and convert to mp3?

I was able to capture the sound generated by my current slow down program and convert to mp3? - took me 30 seconds to set it up...will take longer to walk you through it - unless you give me permission to access your computer and I'll do for you, no problem :)
Did you find the Sounds and Audio Devices?

I just upgraded from XP to Win7
I just installed the newest Audacity. It's mildly different. Here's what I had to do tonight to make it record a Youtube video that was playing.

There are 4 drop down buttons below the BEGIN,END,RECORD buttons:
(MME) (SPEAKER) (MICROPHONE) (STEREO INPUTS)

I clicked on the (MME) and selected (WINDOWS WasAPI)

It worked.

@iceman: if what you want is to slow something down and save it, it's probably simpler to just use audacity to do that than to use audacity to record the output of another program doing that. just open the file, select the audio, and look on the effects menu. "change tempo" changes the speed without changing pitch. that's the one you want. "change speed" also changes pitch. not sure why anyone would want that one.
