Yes, suddenly while gigging 3 times a week, he says I've got a new baby son with the love of my life so am moving to west wales, that is 5 hours away.

He came back tonight for a gig and we parted company.
If only there was more money in this business we could continue.

Life is hard

That really sucks.

I often wonder what the hell I am doing playing so much. I've got 2 kids at home. We've recently started traveling up to Chicago to play along with our regular gigs here, and will be playing some festivals this summer.

I'm sure I will reach a point when I can't take any more, and that will suck - for me and the band. Part of me wishes that I could do it all, but in reality, my first gig is dad and husband.

I hope you find another guitarist soon. Who knows, it could take you a lot of fun musical directions....

In my experience it is far worse if a good drummer or bass player leave a blues band.

@Frank
To cut a LONG story short he only found about the boy some months after birth.

The girlfriend who he was living with here chucked him out acrimoniously.

Now he dotes on the baby and he is getting married to the mother (who is a white witch by the way) in a castle in the wilds of west Wales!

Witches have very powerful, fast broomsticks...
So, commuting for gigs should not be a problem.....

This is a cold world for artists, and those of us who wish to spend their days working on our art, improving ourselves, and entertaining others through our talents and revealing the pain and joy of our bared souls. It leads to heartache and difficulties, and is anathema to family harmony.

When I was young, I told a mentor what I wanted to do with my life. He said, "if you can, you should do something else. Only be an artist if you HAVE to."
After college, I spent 16 years waiting tables and bartending so that I could spend all my other time pursuing my dream with no safety-net. It ended in terrible heartache, and an ultimatum from my wife (and two young children). I chose to meet my family responsibilities, but I was dragged there kicking and screaming.

I've since (sort of) rebuilt my life after three hard years of eating s**t for my decisions. I don't regret what I tried to do, but Man. Pain and Suffering.
Now I'm a weekend bluesman, doing my best with what I got.

Hang in there. It doesn't rain every day.

“You need to spend time crawling alone through shadows to truly appreciate what it is to stand in the sun.”

Nick, was this guitar player particularly good? Most places I've lived have been chock-a-block with guitarists.

bit patronising that post Frank

baby's name is Emrys (which was the name of Merlin) the Druid wizard of the 2nd century bc when the romans invaded Wales and slaughtered most of the auld religon before christianity

@harpburn

He is not from Wales but this woman who he has moved in with is in Pembroke

@Rick

Yeah he is good but I have replaced him now, no worries

Oh, I thought you meant he could stay and would not have to move if you came up with some money - figured it was worth a shot..I got the impression he was moving cause he could get a better paying gig. I'm confused, sorry if I upset you!

This story about a guitarist reminds me of a story, that I have taken some liberties with….

A guitarist and other "soloists" in a band are interviewing a drummer and bassist for spots in a new rhythm section. The guitarist is a little full of himself and at one point asks the applicants what special attributes they will bring to the band. The bass player laughed and said, "Listen my friend, a band is just like a jumbo jet airplane and the rhythm section is the pilot and the co-pilot, we keep it running right and from crashing. AS for the rest of everybody else in the band, you folks are strictly the in-flight entertainment.

I understand thanks for that.

I am upset only because we played well together and things were really taking off musically.

I have been looking for years for that empathy from a guitarist who 'understands' you know what I mean.
