This info was released on the BBC news website today. Sad to say Blues isn't ranked (however it could be squeezed into another genre, maybe jazz or even rock?). How does this compare with the US? I would imagine that blues would feature in an American list. What do our US friends think?
UK ALBUM SALES BY GENRE, 2013 Rock - 33.8% Pop - 31% Dance - 8.3% MOR/easy listening - 8.1% R&B - 5.7% Hip-hop - 3.6% Classical - 3.2% Country - 1.7% Jazz - 1.3% Folk - 1.2%

I couldn't easily find anything other than this from 2012:
http://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2013/01/rock-pop-still-dominate-us-digital-music-sales-chart.html
And in 2013 digital US sales were down. I bet blues is less than 1% of sales. I don't know what classifies as "rock", but evidently, rock is now dead like the blues. ---------- Mike My Website My Harmonica Effects Blog

The UK chart is album sales. I wonder about digital downloads: iTunes, Amazon, etc.

I would have thought that as the blues audience is generally older digital downloads would not be that much of a factor. Not that us old folks can't handle an iPod or whatever but because we like albums and liner notes, even though with the advent of CDs they can be almost impossible to read. I also would have thought that blues audiences generally prefer albums over singles and may well buy a significant number of CDs at gigs. ---------- LSC ---------- LSC

Interesting question....I'm 49 and I grew up with and loved vinyl, progressed thru cassettes to CDs and now as much as I used to love all that extra shit...I'm into the digital method. Without straying too much away from the original thread, you would have to test a huge array of musical demographics to truly arrive at a fair statistic......but yeh...I'm with you guys!!, ha , ;~} ---------- Old Man Rubes at Reverbnation Dads in Space at Reverbnation Benny and Rubes at Reverbnation

I cant find how the different genre rank in the US but i do know Blues is included in the Rock catagory by Billboard. Tedeschi Truck new album Made up mind was tracking at #2 in rock for a while. ---------- LINK "Blues with a vigor and determination hitherto unknown to the people of this area." Mudflap Nichols

I'm amazed that rock edges out pop, if even by a small margin.
I'd say that to UK ears, some things that would be termed rock could well be leaning more towards blues, and in fact, much of the blues stuff could be lumped in with rock, which may explain why the figures are laying out like this.
Plus, like Adam says they're album sales. When you check the CD selection in the supermarket nowadays, its full of Susan Boyle albums and compilations. No one under 50 really goes for the physical CD format any longer.
