Here's a mini PA rig: SM57 mic, Flat Cat compressor, into 44 Magnum amp pedal and speaker box. Clean, full sounding. What I like is the speaker box - with 10" speaker - looks like it was taken right off the wall of a public school classroom.

I'm still trying it out with my Telecaster. It's an interesting guitar sound with the 44 Magnum, can't quite explain it. It's snappy like a rubber band, if that makes sense.
I'm in Sherman Oaks, CA

i have an elcectro harmonix amp it works very well with guitar or harmonica totally stock no tube swaps lol
i'd bet with the right little pre-amp that thing would rock. is it battery powered? ----------

It uses a plug, but not the black cube kind. It uses a regular amp power cord into a transformer, and then the transformer brick has a little power cord to the pedal. I was so glad, cause I hate all those black cube things. No battery option.
Anyway, I've been looking at preamps - can't decide, there are some cool ones. I think you're right - it's like a power amp only and could use a preamp.

so maybe a tube pre-amp to smooth things out perhaps a mic pre-amp would work? or maybe a butler overdrive with a kinder antifeedback pedal seems like there could be endless options finding the right one is essential.
did you build the speaker cab? ----------

That Butler looks cool. Got the speaker cab on eBay, from a guy who makes them in Fresno. They smell great cause they're unfinished.

ART Tube MP Studio is a bargain preamp and gets the job done very nicely! ----------

I second the ART Tube MP, cheap and works great. You can dial in a bunch of dirt too if you want. I bought mine to travel light, plug in to a PA and go. Needs a proprietary power cube though. Works great in front of a tube amp with varying amounts of gain as well.

I used to have an ART, sounded great. And I actually used the Phase Inversion switch with the SM57 - that was essential. I always wondered what you're getting with a $500 mic preamp that you don't get with the $25 ART. Cause the ART did the job.
I'm keeping my eye on ART cause they're always coming out with new stuff. I might try the latest generation of their preamps. But nothing over $100.
