Recently when I click onto the Dirty South Blues Harp forum, another window opens up. Yesterday this window said I was the 10,000 visitor to this site and would I be willing to take a short survey for a free gift.
Today when I accessed the site, another window popped open offering a harmonica course by that long haired sensitive guy that claims he can teach you to play easily in about three months if you subscribe to his lessons.
Also, a small window pops open on the site and plays a commercial.
Am I the only one plagued with this?

No, never has happened. Sounds like you have spyware on board. ----------

I had that for some time on all web pages I was looking at. especially MBH. I'm not going to be much help, BUT if you google it there's a setting in the control panel that turns that ish off. Sorry I don't remember exactly where and how to do that. But google is your friend

Iceman - if you are clicking on a favourite/bookmark to open MBH, then have a look at the address in it. It may not be going directly to the target any more.
Or try going directly to the link http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/blues_harp_forum.html
...if you still get the popups then it could be your name server address has been altered to take you through a bogus website first that does the popups.
What these bad people can do is change your settings to take you to your destination, but redirected via an advert site.

Thanks, MindTheGap.
I'm pretty astute at scanning for cookies/trojans/virus with four different programs.
Nothing found.
ah well.

It's nothing we're doing here, I can assure you. "We" is a figure of speech. This damned place, plus nacoran and toddparrott, runs itself. I need to show up more.
But seriously, folks: it's not "us."

Like Adam said, it's nothing on this end. I've only ever once seen a report like that- there were ads linked to some phrases on the site, but it ended up being something on the user end.
Mindthegap's advice sounds more advanced than what I'd give, but I'd add one thing- if you aren't already, get Adblock for your browser of choice. It's really good at blocking ads that are acting badly. Also, when it happens, check the link in your URL to make sure it's good, and if it's not, Google that link- often that will get you some links to tech forums that have heard of the specific problem and can give you advice on how to block it.

nacoran is right I think, it's probably your PC. I agree an ad-blocker is a good idea in general, but this problem is a bit different. At the moment you may just be getting annoying ads, but it could redirect you to something more malicious, so worth fixing.
I would suggest checking your internet connection settings for the 'proxy hijack', at least just to rule it out. I searched for some instructions, and this below is quite good. This one is for Internet Explorer, but the principle is the same for all browsers. It also explains why (if you have had this problem) then your AV program may not be able to fix it, you have to do it manually.
It may not be this, but it's only a few clicks to check it.
