Lots of guitar players make feedback part of their music, and I understand getting an amp working on the verge of feedback, but are there harp players that use feedback like notes?

Darrell Mansfield used it while playing "Watch Tower" on harmonica at NAMM last year or the year before. Should be a video on youtube. Cool to watch him work the equipment.I copied his technequic and used it with my band.Gets a good WOW factor when your playing out.

I haven't mastered it yet, but I've developed a way of playing the feedback pitch on my Kalamazoo 2. I turn on the tremolo to a freq of 6 or so, turn to volume way up, the tone all the way down, and then maneuvering my mic in front of its speaker, I get a theremin like sound. Depending on the angle of the mic element, I can change the pitch to a degree, but not every mic works like that. Low-Z elements boosted to 50K with a transformer tend to work best. If I have time, I'll try and record a video demo of it.

I was looking into a theremin recently. Wife said NO WAY when she saw a $500 price tag.

Harper actually sticks his mic right into the speaker to get a feedback warble on a song or 2, no harp at all.

Harper and John Popper. Both use feedback sans harmonica. If you can find a clip of Carolina Blues, I think, from Blues Traveler's live DVD, you can see what he's doing.

I *think* he uses a small amp set up just for feedback and uses an amp switcher to get at it.

When I had a Kinder AFB+ and Bassman, I could get it to feedback really cool-like. I've then cheated and used a couple of effects to get feedback-like tones while either playing into or singing into my mic.

@arnenym and late 80's early 90's. I saw Johnny Mars a few times back then when I was living in the UK (two stints) and he played some wild effects laden harp.

@jbone

Yeah, I feel you there. I think the theremin kits sold are cheaper. I've thought about getting one to play around with and come up with onstage applications for. I talked to a local guitarist the other night who said he has a specialized pickup on a guitar that works on the same principle as a theremin by way of a ring he wears on his pick hand. Can give him wah effects and other sounds.

there used to be alocal player who played feedback as part of his set. on certain songs, he'd aim the mic at his amp, using hand effects to modulate the sound. very cool.

i can add that our guitar player does this lots, and it is pretty easy to mimic and reinforce it on harp.. a long drawn out constant tone on a harp sounds feedbackish...to the point that when we were recording our cd the sound tech thought that is what it was.

It seems to me that Billy Gibson toys with feedback in a musical way at times.

In the duo with Jolene, we really don't do anything I could use the feedback thing on. It is intriguing though!
