I have been playing around the edges of busking (but have yet to dive in and put a hat out).
I have been thinking about the idea of making little comments about what is going on around me through the music. An example I have tries, but have yet to see any evidence anyone has noticed, is working in a phrase from "where or where has my little dog gone", or "How much is that doggie in the window" when someone walks by with a dog.
I would love to hear others ideas and especially experiences with this type of thing.
Some ideas I had (some of with could cause problems if not done tactfully are),
I'm late from Disney's Alice and wonderland when someone hurries by.
Pretty Woman, when an attractive woman walks by.
USC fight song, when you see someone displaying USC colors.
Send in the Clowns, when someone does something comical.
You get the idea. Anyone care to share any experiences on this subject?

Someone carrying a baby - you can do the "i want my mama" trick..and then break into a "crying wha-wha".
If paramedics walk by - do a "siren" then "taps"

We had a song with the line 'sirens call' and I used to play a siren sound on the harp. (European style, I could never figure out how to do a good U.S. style siren). (We used a snippet of taps in that song too, actually, right after the line, 'everything dies'.)
I think the closest I've done to what you are saying happened one day in the park. I was sitting on the hood of my car, playing some blues, and a lady was walking back to her car. She seemed to be ignoring me. I noticed she had a bumper sticker that, at least in my mind, indicated she had slightly high brow tastes, so as she was climbing into the car I switched over to the theme from Masterpiece Theater. She got back out of the car and said, 'Masterpiece Theater!' and gave me a smile and a thumbs up.
Call and response can work well for getting the audience into your music. At open mics I've sung a couple originals were I sang a line and had the audience sing it back to me instead of playing the harp. I figure if I can get it stuck in their heads...
