I'm looking to make a suitcase foot drum mostly just as a side project, I'll probably end up giving it to a guitar player as a gift. I've started looking up suitable suitcases on ebay and a foot pedal. My question is this, whats the best drum to use in the suitcase? Has anybody built one of these things? I've attached a video where you can see Shakey's drum and it looks like it's a snare drum..... is that right? If so any insight as to how it's mounted?

Thanks guys!

Some time ago i watched a couple with nothing but a mike in the guitar box, and foot tapping it to add rythm, was good with no fancy b3llshit, so why bother with the technic thing when this is all thats required to give a good vibe/feel/sound?...tapping along with the song....nuff sed.

Here one i built I started with a bass pedal hitting the suitcase (samsonite type of material most people recomend)I latter cut a hole in it the diameter of a tamberine a hair smaller, than monted a tamberine in it,I also cut of 4 inch diameter round hole in the front,It works pretty good, but does have jangels from the tamberine, some people might like some not,Ive sence took off the marocos egg rattles on the arm of the pedal,I use them with a more portable setup where i tie them on my boot with a foot tamberine and stomp on the stompbox,Foot drums to me are allways changing trying to get the sound im looking for,But i have seen some kits set up for drummers, the had a tom and the high hat and pedal in the box, pretty cool

I have a plate about 4X6" screwd in the bottom of the suitcase so I can tighten down the base pedal,I put a weight lifting plate in the box to help keep it from moving forward and have two rubber bumpers underneath it,carpet might work also,

Thanks for the insight Hobostubs! I'll be documenting my little project as I go along.

Stan- " why bother with the technical thing when this is all thats required to give a good vibe/feel/sound?"-- You're absolutely right.... I could easily just stomp on a box to add rhythm..... But where's the fun in making that? Also, I'll probably be giving this to a guitar playing buddy of mine and it makes for a cooler gift if it's a little more elaborate than just a mic mounted in a box.

My friend and I have been working on stomp boxes. He came up with a clever trick for the pedal. He used a rubber superball instead of a spring for the foot pedal. (racquetball sized)

Seems to work okay, and gives it a nice sort of DIY look. :)

Oh, and Hobo, thanks for answering the Bat Signal!

one problem with the suitcase drum set is they tend to leave the suitcase 100% intact. I love the idea of putting some kind of drum in it. Obviously it isn't necessary but it's pretty much a "must have" in my book!

Its easy just wire a piozo pickup into a good box and itS done ,Cigarbboxnation got me started, and gitty's got me the suplies ,its basic wiring and not much to it,if you need some help i gladely help.I like the stompbox into a PA because it gives a good solid bass thump compared to micing the suitcase, thump is good;-)

I was stupid when I went to get a tambourine. I didn't realize there was such a thing as a foot tambourine, so I just bought a regular D shaped one, for about $40, which isn't nearly as easy to use, and the foot tambourine would have only been about $10!

Right now, I'm using a little wooden canvas frame like a painter would use and putting a mic underneath it. I got at a crafts store. That's the right foot, and the tambourine is the left. I've got some egg shakers too, but by the time I remember the notes I want to play and sing, and the words, and operate both feet, my brain is stretched to the breaking point. I haven't figured out what to do yet when I have to switch a foot pedal on on a beat either.

Yea i can understand that Nate,I sometimes practice with, both but find i get a tighter groove, with the eggs tied on the same foot as the tamberine thats also hitting the stompbox.I can usually hit the loop pedal(rp155) on beat with the other foot, but have trouble working the Mini hi/hat with the suitcase drum and pedal,so I thinned it down.I still have problems keping a beat, once the rythem is looped, and im trying some guitar lead, which the rythem is looped so it would seem to be easier, but i notice alot of times im not tapping;-)something im trying to get better at,Yea i didnt know about foot tamberines untill i saw one On musicians friend the other day.I like them

@Seven of Three
I have a very nice one I built using a tweed cuits case from the 40's that I would be willing to sell.
I spent over three years messing with different style stomp boxes and once I built something very useable (musical), now I'm having SI joint problems in my lower back which prevents me from using it.
I also built a small box like a cigar box, but slightly thinner with a snare on the inside of the top. It actually sounds like a snare drum.
If Iplay them for more than 10 minutes my lower back and knees hurt for a few days! So I'd like to sell them for what It cost me to make them.
If any one is interested contact me at: sbaker60@cox.net I can Email pics.
