Hi, I'm a student of musicology from Vienna and I'm about to write a thesis about the physics of the diatonic harmonica. The main topic is going to be about what happens in the instrument when you bend or overblow notes and how the frequencies change with hand-effects for example. The thing has to be 10-15 pages long, no big thing, but i have trouble finding some literature about this specific topic.

These are the only ones I found about it (Could be interessting for some of you too):

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/antaki/articles/Bahnson%20JASA%201998.pdf
(Bahnson, Henry T. / Antaki, James F. / Beery, Quinter C.: „Acoustical and physical dynamics of the diatonic harmonica“, in: The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 103/4 (1998), P. 2134 – 2144.)

http://mis.ucd.ie/Members/RJohnst/oldharp.pdf
(Johnston, Robert B.: „Pitch Control in Harmonica Playing“, in: Acoustics Australia 15/2 (1987), P. 69 – 75.)

Do you know any more?
Or do you have any tips for me?

Thanks already!

"Pitch Control in Harmonica playing"
Robert B Johnston

"Theoretical and experimental investigation of the air driven free reed", James P Cottingham

"Variation of frequency with blowing pressure
for an air-driven free reed"
James P. Cottingham. Christopher H. Reed, and Michael Busha*
physics Department, Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402, USA
*Current address: Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA 50112, USA

If you can't find these, get back to me and I will send you PDF files. I also have some high speed photography of reeds that I have taken that I can share with you if you are interested. Some of it has already been posted to this forum.

Thanks! I already had a few of Cottingham's works but I didn't know "Theoretical and experimental investigation of the air driven free reed". I think it could be really useful and I already found the PDF.

I was planning to make pictures and videos myself, we also have a high speed camera at our institute but if it's no problem to you, you can send them to my e-mail adress. They could be useful too. Can I send you a personal message here?

There's also a anechoic chamber at our institute so if I make some recordings and measurements I could upload them somewhere.

This video shows what's going on in the mouth, not the harp, but it's related. It's from Turboharp.com.

They've got a couple other videos-

(Turboharp is James Antaki's site).
