For the 2nd year in a row, someone got in my Jeep and took my 3 practice harps from my glove box. I usually keep it locked. But forgot to this time. Thankfully it was only my Star Performers and won't cost much to replace them. But these were the older ones, about 15 years old and actually played pretty decent. So...

I'm shopping for some low cost harps to replace them. I only need 5. Keys of G, A, Bb, C & D. I'm thinking either a few more Huang's or maybe Big Rivers. Something in the under $30 class that won't be total crap, but would be fine enough for playing when my gig set ain't around. Your thoughts?...

That's a total drag. Sorry to hear that but at least it wasn't anything more valuable.

I have a bunch of throw-downs in the pile..
a few LOs and Suzuki Bushmasters.. if you want to email me I will try to hook you up...inexpensively

Mudhound...Well, in the scope of things it was a petty crime. "Little" people do petty stuff.

Gmaj7... I may get a hold of you with in the next couple of days. I do have 2 LOs, one in G and one in D. Both have a blown 7 blow that needs replaced. So I may just get new plates for them. The LO ain't a bad harp. But this may be a good time to try out a brand that I've never played before. Like the Suzuki.

I recently bought a couple huangs, thinking that they would be like the Silvertone deluxe I had from 15 years
ago, one of my fave harps. The new ones are not as good in my opinion. Get a Big River or a Blue Midnight, I have
been pleased with both of these which I have bought
lately.

The last Huangs I bought were a sorry excuse for harps. Silvertones, they should call them Leaktones. I still have the ones I bought over 25 years ago; I stopped playing them because the wore out, but they're still better than the garbage they're selling now.

Harpmasters are very good harps. Don to any lower than B.River if you want a decent harp.

What you need to do, is find someone with something communicable, and let them lick one of your harmonicas!

I remember an old episode of MASH where they caught the thief with a purple dye that appears after an hour(actually, there was no purple die, but the thief didn't know that.) Someone needs to invent a purple dye pack for harmonicas. You just arm one harmonica in each bunch, and look for the purple mouthed crook.

I love that explanation 2chops. It's funny because it's true.

+1 on forgetting the current Huang's. Pure crap.

From another thread: go to amazon and search for "best deals eva", go to musical instruments, find some suzuki harps on deep discount sale; folkmasters for 2.25; harpmasters for 6 bucks, bluesmasters for 12.

IMHO, either the harpmaster or bluesmaster is a far better harp than the Big River. The BR is the harp I wanted to love but just couldn't. Much too leaky without a custom comb added on.

Nate... Funny you mention the blue dye episode of MASH. My wife said the same thing this morning. And I know she doesn't read this forum. She said one of those dye packs that banks use for when they get heisted. That would be hilarious.

An interesting follow up to this. My band had a gig last night at this large coffee shop. Over 100 people there. Anyways. After we get done, my brother-in-law comes up and tells me he found a bunch of still new harps that his dad had when he was still alive. His dad was quite the in demand harp guy in the local bluegrass scene. So Bill says he wants to give them to me next time he sees me. His dad played SP20's mainly. Score! He says they're in a bunch of different keys, so I may luck out on this one. I wish I could have met his dad before he died. I know I would have learned some cool stuff off of him. Oh well.

Got that right nick. Like I said in the OP, I'm glad it was only some old Huang's. My gig bag is never left unattended. I have over $1000 worth of harps in it. Add in a couple of mics and some cords, I wouldn't be quite so calm about it.
