OK, I came to blues and swing very late. It took B.B. King and Joe Jackson to turn me on to this music about 15 years ago, long before I ever knew who Louis Jordan was. Shame on me. Don't you make the same mistake. Louis Jordan was the king of swing - and just SO cool! You need to know his stuff!

I love Louis Jordan. Here's two from his later period, 1956 to 1958. He was on his way down on the hit parade, but still turning out great records.
A different version of Mojo:
And here's a laid back instrumental, "The Jamf" (not the Jamp, as the YouTube poster called it). JAMF is 50's slang for Jive Ass Mother... can't remember the last word but someone'll help me.
Thanks for reminding us of him, Greg. I hear lots of ideas for the harp in his alto sax playing.
Cheers,

Yes indeed! If you want to really get a handle on playing swing you need to listen to guys like Louis Jordan. Superb music that should be essential listening for every blues harp player. Louis and his band just oozed class and make swing look so, so easy. Players like Lester Young, Red Prysock, Gator Jackson and many more should be on every harp players radar.

That's where Aki Kumar got his moves from! I agree on the essential listening , I think in a way if you want to really capture the LW ,BW sound these are the guys to listen too(kingley list) cause this is prob the guys they were listening too. Or something along these lines. But Denis grueling beat us all to it :)

Dead right all of the above. It drives me nuts every time our band does Caldonia, and our front man introduces it as a BB King number. He was a great storyteller, comedian and all round entertainer as well. How about:
grab your e flat and jam along

Louis was one of the first to form a small 5 piece combo at the end of the big band era.
Little Walter was influenced by listening to Louis Jordan.
I heard a section of a Little Walter solo a long time ago that was a transcription of a sax solo from Louis...but can't remember the exact tune now. ---------- The Iceman

Louis was one of Carrie Bell's biggest influences. He wanted to play sax but could not afford one. I love all Louis stuff. Great thread!

I'm a huge Louis Jordan fan and he was a HUGE influence on many blues artists, including Little Walter and in his time, to the black audience, he was the Michael Jackson of his day. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Ya! Totally agree. I consider him a seminal influence on what was to become rock and roll. Perhaps a bit of a stretch, but maybe the first rapper, too.
